I'm using Duolingo for Spanish and it's been awesome so far, the only downside of the app is when it comes to learning languages like Japanese or Arabic. I feel a lack of material for speaking and listening exercises for these languages.

For those just wanting to learn anothe kanguage just for the sake of it, I would suggest to start with western European ones first as they require minimal transition between each other. Yes english applies here as well.

I've been using Duolingo for over a year now to learn Mandarin Chinese. I'm learning to recognize characters as well as the spoken word. And I even recognize some Chinese when I hear it now.
