The 5 Best -Ab- Exercises (YOU-RE NOT DOING)

Ab exercises don-t always have to involve the abs directly in order to be effective. In fact, if you really want to work your abs and get them to look their best you better be doing more than just direct ab exercise and workouts. In this video, I show you how to make 5 simple tweaks to common exercises that you use when training your upper body that will allow you to increase your ab training volume. These small changes will lead to major improvements in your core and abs in no time. Indirect ab exercises can be performed by changing the basic exercises you do in the rest of your workouts. For instance, a traditional incline dumbbell bench press can become a core crusher by simply doing it with one dumbbell at a time. By using a heavy weight on one side of the body, you force the opposite side of your core, obliques, etc to work hard to prevent you from tipping to the side of the dumbbell. This same concept can be applied to back training as well. I show you how both the one arm row and v-grip pullups can be modified just slightly to make sure the abs are fired up throughout the exercise. The best part is that you don-t have to compromise the effectiveness of the originally intended exercise to make it an ab exercise as well. By simply altering the positioning of your feet, hands, or both you can make a major impact on your abs. We call this concept, putting your core at the core of every exercise. It-s paramount to training like an athlete. Athletes are not afforded the opportunity to function in controlled environments. When they move during a sport or game they are often moving in three dimensions and unpredictable ways. If you only train your abs with exercises that move you in one plane at a time, you-ll never be prepared enough to handle the real world stresses that will be placed upon them. This is why the ATHLEAN-X Training System includes both direct and indirect ab exercises. We help you to build a ripped six pack while keeping your core functionally strong by hitting your abs from every angle. I completely agree with the exercises except for the fact that every one of these can easily cause muscle imbalances, and also cause to have one side stronger than the other. Of course you work both sides equally, but your dominant side will have an easier time performing these exercises while your weaker side will always struggle. In my opinion, do these exercises, but START with your weak/awkward side, say the one arm DB incline press, instead of starting strong on your dominant side, start opposite. This way, your body will adjust accordingly. Once you adjust, which could take months depending on your schedule, both sides will be relatively equal. To sum up, start with your weak side.

I have seen a lot of different programs from Six Pack Shortcuts to PumpChasers and Matt Ogus and I can honestly say that Jeff and Athlean-X are the best in my humble opinion. Sure the other guys have great physiques and they are built very well, but they do a lot of exercises that either aren't safe, or they have pretty bad form in their movements. Not only is the info Jeff provides useful, but he gives you safe alternatives to doing moves like leg extensions and chest flys. Not everybody just wants to get huge, but what Jeff is doing is training you to be a well rounded athletic type which is much more functional. Thinking of buying his program soon.

I have always struggled with going to the gym because I simply don't know what to do when I get there. I'm not some big tough guy but I'm not a giant fat guy either or a little shrimp, I'm just not very tonned or strong. These videos are helping me understand how to actually train my body and give me a much better idea of what I need to actually be doing. When a fitness training book says -do # pull ups- it just doesn't mean much to me because I don't really get it. This guy actually explains with specifics what each kind of pull up can be and what they do etc. He is incredibly helpful

These are some great ideas, Jeff. Just had one question: You mentioned that a one-arm dumbbell incline bench press had two benefits -- the core work, and the ability to train a weak side of your delts. But if only for the core aspect, you'd want to perform the move on both sides, wouldn't you, thereby negating the training-one-weaker-delt idea? This isn't really a practical issue for me -- I'd just do it on both sides. I was just curious about your thinking on that one.

Jeff your videos are always awesome. I would like to hear from an expert some ways to train my glutes. My mom told me one time that my back goes right into my hamstrings. thats a bit of an exaggeration but I think it helps prove my point. I don't have a squat cage at home but more important I think maybe I am looking for ways to train the Glutes and not necessarily the hamstrings.

the other way to do the unilateral DB Row is to take the knee off the bench and set up one hand on the bench, works better than the BB row suggested as the movement pattern is changed (in to more of an upright row/trap dominant exercise_. The single arm DB row with flat back targets more lats. Great video here and ideas to engage the core -athleanx

I like the idea of throwing in ab work on stuff you're already doing. Could you make a video of a few exercises that work many muscle groups at once? Maybe even a complementary routine? I already do leg lifts with dips and pull ups, and I adopted your multi-plane cable bench press. I'm sure you can up with like 20 that are better.

Jeff, i heard Keith Webber (Extreme Kettle Bell Exercises) on Joe Rogans podcast say he does Farmers Walks with only one weight so that his body has to adjust. What is your opinion of just using a singular weight on one side as opposed to your suggestion of the different sized weights.
Keep up the great work!

I had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder so for a while I HAD to only do chest press with the left side only. Once my right side started feeling good enough to work out again, I still kept doing one side at a time. It just feels right to do it that way now. I've gotten used to it.
