Back Pain With Ab Exercises (WHAT TO DO)

If you have back pain, there are certain ab exercises that you need to look more closely at how you are performing. The basic crunch is one of those ab exercises. Provided you are not suffering from a herniated disc in your lumbar spine, crunches and ab exercises can be performed in your workouts. That said, you must be sure that your abdominal muscles are actually doing the work and not your hip flexors or psoas. As you-ll see in this video, when the hip flexors dominate ab exercises, the end result is an ab exercise that becomes a back pain exercise (or at least a back pain causing abs exercise! To be sure that your psoas is not contributing too much you need to deactivate it by contracting the muscles on the opposite side of the hip. When you actively contract your hamstrings and glutes, you reciprocally inhibit the contraction of the hip flexors. This allows the abs to dominate the exercise as they should. Compensating for weak abs is one of the most common problems seen in the gym today. The second you lack the necessary strength in your core to complete an ab exercise, your body turns to the muscles nearby to help do the job that the abs are not. This is not the solution. Doing this simply leads to an overactive and tight muscle that torques your spine and leads to back pain. You must learn to take a step back and first concentrate on developing the proper strength in the abs by performing your ab exercises correctly. Once you have the strength needed to move forward, you can then start adding harder and harder versions of ab exercises in to your workouts. Turning to back pain exercises and stretches is usually a bandaid for the root cause of the problem. You can try and stretch out your back all day long but if you never focus on strengthening your weak abs, you-ll always tend to wind up back in the same spot. That is, with a sore back following your ab exercises or crunches. If you want to start eliminating back pain once and for all, and get back to doing your workouts without low back discomfort, be sure to visit and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System. This complete workout program was designed for professional athletes (and guys wanting to look like them) to build ripped, athletic muscle safely under the guidance of a physical therapist

what i still don't quite get is, is this ab workout-caused back pain even dangerous? i mean, can it result in some sort of permanent injury? because truth be told, i do get back pain from it but it really isn't that strong and by no means pesters me all the time. basically the only reason why i decided to train my core for now instead is because i feared it would hurt my spine in the long run but if it's just a muscle that's strained. maybe there's nothing to worry about and it will subside in time?
another thing is, currently basically the only exercises from here that i can do on my own (no access to a gym) is the planks (which i do) as well as the suitcase thing but that last one kind of bothers me. i try to keep my back, neck and shoulders as straight as possible but i'm just not sure, isn't that exercise a bit risky? i do it with a 48 pound dumbbell, maybe it's too heavy?

-Hi, I'm 15 and have terrible posture. It's very noticeable and I feel like the hump back of Notre Dame my back has been like this for about 2 years. I started to get a terrible posture when I just turned 14, I started to notice it when I started playing a ton of video games ( --tinyurl. com/y3osmws8-- ) and I regret every bit of it. I would sit in a four legged chair in front of my TV leaning forward and now I feel like I will be like this forever! I need help. I ask my parents if I can go to a chiropractor but we just can't afford it. I don't in w what to do now. and to make it even worse I gained a ton of weight. hi weighed 120 pounds at age 14 and now at age 15 weighing 170. I just don't know what to do anymore. video games ruin lives. -

I tried the 200 crunches a day challenge along with a 100 squats a day challenge and by the 4th day I couldn't walk because of intense pain from muscle spasms in my lower back and pain in my pelvic area. I thought it was due to the intensity of the exercise and how abruptly I started it but recently I started a much less intense ab exercise & its the 2nd day and I'm already having spasms in my lower back. can you give us adjustments like this one to the other ab workout exercises please so I can avoid the pain but have the abs I want.

for anyone wondering, yes it helped, helped me at least update: turns out it was lack of flexibility which makes sense because that-s why crunches doesn-t cause as much pain if any, because sit ups brings your chest closer to your knees and in my case, my flexibility was horrible which caused pain in my lower back. so doing stretches that improved flexibility in my lower back (like touching toes, butterfly and lean forward, etc) helped to eliminate the pain through time.

Hey Jeff- thank you for doing these videos I feel like we finally have someone on You tube that actually knows what they are doing. I suffer with a lot of chronic pain due to wrong technique exercises. I would love to say I know what I am doing after 30 years of exercising but it is very obvious I don't. Ha! I love your visual teaching and your physical therapy training it really helps me to identify why I am having so many problems. Thanks again.

My god, you have no idea how much I've searched for these answers. I've been through 3 or 4 gyms already and consulted with the professionals on all of them and noone could help me with this pain. I can't do more than 30 repetitions without stopping because of the intense pain in my lower back!
I'll try this tomorrow!

This video is a godesnt. Over had intense lower back pain with any abdominal exercises because I overworked my abs 2 years ago. But I tried this the second i stumble upon it and it actually helps a whole lot. I'm only 19 and to not be able to do 5 sit ups without pain was embarrassing thank you!

I've been training my upper abs for awhile just by holding my calf in the air parallel to the ground. My issue is finding a bottom up exercise that doesn't hurt my back because any type of leg lifts tear my back apart just gonna have to get a pull up bar to do hanging leg lifts I guess
