if you just want to lose the pounds following a good weight lifting program the treadmill is the best and here is why you can leave it on flat be easier on your legs and you still burn calories is all about how much blood your heart pumps to your body or BPM if you jog at 5. 5 MPH at 0 incline your heart still BPM a descent rate and 30 to 60 min of jogging you burn a descent amount of calories, the treadmill is easier on your joints then concrete or jogging outside if you sprint you less likely to get hurt then doing it outside as far as conditioning, if you are out of shape the treadmill will help you get into shape then you can do it outside and it wont interfere with you weightlifting, the other cardio machines like the eliptical and the spin class you will take a beating on those and thats a workout all on its own as you require resistance so if you weightlift you may need some time to recuperate but definately doing any type of cardio indoors is not the same as outside but something its better then nothing.

It all depends on how you use the treadmill. I have one and I use mine to incline walk while I watch movies or TV programs. The moment I get one the treadmill I warm up as I increase the speed and incline until I reach the max incline which is 12 on mine and speed of 2-2. 5. I have set up a TV at eye level directly in front of the treadmill which is hooked up to a computer tower so essentially it becomes a computer monitor (it has a VGA cable ability) and I watch movies and other programs online while I incline walk. So I get 45 minutes to 2 hours worth of incline walking and since my mind is focused on the program I am not focused on the burning, good pain, etc etc that comes with cardio especially the boredom associated with it. I burn a shit load of calories and I hardly notice since I am focused on something else. I'm lazy so I had to do what ever it took to ensure that I got my ass doing some cardio after my workouts.

i started road cycling in january i been putting lot of miles avg 60 miles per week im 170 lbs my bf is 16% i just started to resistance train again just doing upper body for now just looking to lower my BF% a bit my goal right now is 14% ill be very happy with that but cycling that many miles a week i can feel it on my legs what im doing its working i wish i could cycle more but thats all the energy i have at the moment as i got other things to do like going to work etc but for me cycling is the #1 and weightlifting is a supplement to my cycling. you need to train according to your goals if you serious into lifting and just do some cardio on the treadmill with no resistance and you be good and always 90% of it its nutrition there is a post i read that says fitness is recommended but nutrition is required.

My girlfriend used to run a lot, and in general do varied exercises to keep up a nice level of fitness. Now, after a few years of basically nothing, she is trying to get back into it - but she is going to the gym to run on a treadmill.
Now she's just ending up with pains in her lower back, her knees, tightness in hip flexors and cramping up in her neck and shoulders. It leads to her not having any consistency with her training, because she needs to take too much time off to recover.
I keep telling her and trying to explain that I don't think a treadmill is what she should be running on. but she just gets grumpy at me and tells me -I'm a foot therapist (a student) and I know better than you how these things work-.
Sheesh. Fine.
So annoying.

I agree with many of the points, At my fittest my weight was 75-78 Kgs But with personal experience i have learned that I could easily use HIIT to go from 85 Kgs to 75 Kgs, but i cannot use HIIT to go from 100 kgs to 90 Kgs, this happens because of something I call the Diesel engine effect, your own weight will not let you give a 100% in any of HIIT movements like burpees et. al. which you need to do in order to lose weight. treadmills help you get through that 100-85 part, by making the exercise repeatable. you need to constantly monitor your progress to see whats working and whats not.

I tend to use a treadmill to ensure that I get my workouts done. It doesn't matter what the weather's like, the treadmill is always available and at odd hours of the day. I also like to track my progress, even if it's just an estimate, and as a relatively inexperienced runner it also helps me learn how to pace myself to last an hour. The reality is that it does work and I've gotten great results. I had not thought about the bad posture. Thus, it's a good learning tool but one should definitely advance to running outdoors as often as possible.

it's about using the treadmill intelligently. you can waste alot of time and feel like rat in a wheel if you don't know how to train. i see alot of overweight people walking with an incline while holding onto the console thinking they're getting optimal workout.
I blame the -lemming- culture
just do as you see other people do without asking questions.
Also gym instructors have a share in the blame writing sub standard programmes and not correcting bad form and incorrect use of equipment.

The treadmill has been great for me. I just started working out and a month ago, my heart rate was 170 doing 15 minutes at 3mph. Then I did half an hour at still 170 heart rate. Then an hour. Over the last few weeks, my heart rate has been steadily going down. Yesterday I had a heart rate of only 150 after doing 3 mph for an hour. If I didn't have this feedback, I would assume I wasn't making any progress and give up.
Plus it's freaking 100 degrees outside and screw that.

Running on the treadmill graced me with a second chance to run again after 10 years of injuries lol. I can only run outside a couple days a week before some bones in my feet start rubbing together from the torquing in the stress of running outside. The fact that the belt pulls my feet takes a lot of stress off of those bones that rub together and allows me to train much longer and more often. I've lost 20 pounds running and walking on the treadmill in four months lol: )
