Arnold Schwarzenegger Workout Tips (5 THINGS I LEARNED)

Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the few people recognizable by his first name alone, and his workouts are the stuff of legend! As a kid growing up in the 80-s and 90-s, I was heavily influenced and inspired by Arnold to not only get in shape but to take that passion and make it a lifelong career. To pay homage to the man that lit this fire in me, I made a video of Arnold-s top workout tips and how each one has stuck with me and guided my approach to training and working out. To be fair, Arnold Schwarzenegger and I don-t exactly see eye to eye on everything when it comes to working out. I-ve done videos showcasing what I feel are five of the worst exercises you can do that each appear in the Arnold Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding. Do I think they are not effective exercises for building muscle? No, I never said that. I do think however that there are equally good alternatives that produce just as many gains without having to leave yourself as vulnerable to injury while doing them. Even Arnold himself, has reported tearing his pecs twice while performing his favorite chest exercise - flys - that only strengthens my opinion to look for safer alternatives. Likewise, it-s well documented, Arnold Schwarzenegger worked out under the influence of performance enhancing drugs. Certainly, a good deal more is known today about the dangers of PED-s than was known then, and we should always look to pursue options for maximizing our muscle gains without them. In fact, Arnold himself would encourage this. Had he adopted this new stance back then however, it would have greatly limited his ability to perform his legendary 4 and 5 hour workouts by simply eliminating his ability to recover as quickly as he did from his intense workouts. That being said, when it came to training, Arnold-s workout routine and intensity during it were unmatched. He felt that if you were going to go to they gym then you might as well make it worth your while. Arnold-s workouts weren-t meant to be comfortable. That was something you sought out after you finished your work, not during it! Next, Arnold was known for his occasional one day cure. This involved him heading into the woods with his friends to workout with just a single piece of equipment and a single exercise for an entire day of training. This concept is actually one that I strongly believe delivers great results (minus the trip to the woods of course. If you make sure to train intensely during that exercise and let the muscles you are intending to workout do the lion-s share of the work, you will get great results despite the limited variety. Showcasing Arnold Schwarzenegger-s workout tip variety however is the fact that he also believed in constantly shocking the muscle. If you could do just one thing every workout to make your muscles feel something they never felt before, you could ensure that you would be pushing it outside of it-s comfort zone and into the growth zone. Things like drop sets, run the rack, forced reps, negatives, etc were all techniques that Arnold used in his workouts to build such impressive muscle. One technique in particular was called 21-s. With 21-s, Arnold-s bicep workouts took on a whole new intensity. By performing 21 reps of barbell curls (7 in each portion of the exercise-s 3 major ranges of motion, Arnold was able to build softball sized biceps and get arms that he would become noted for. Finally, if nothing else, you would want to be inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger-s commitment to working out with no excuses and to letting nothing or nobody get in his way. His dedication and perseverance allowed him to not only have one of the greatest bodies of his time (or of all time) but to accomplish things in his life and career that many thought he would never do. ali: I-m getting more stronger and better every time I hit the gym and it-s because I-m very efficient and I enjoy it very much because I train with such high intensity where it-s all been planned out what I-m going to do and how long my session will take and I-m always sure to be efficient about always increasing the quality and speed of my WO

I implement 21s / cheating reps to chest in a way. If i bench 120 and begin to get my 10. 12. maybe 16 reps. I up it to 140. At 140kg I go as far down as I can and train the upper range. Then when I go back to 120kg eventually I can bench 120 much easier and get my lower range working good. listening to my body I'll know when I'm ready now to push harder at 140 and go down to the chest and up. Kinda how I level up. I havnt been gym in a while. So now I may struggle even at 60kg but I'll take my time and slowly work my muscles out 60. 80. 100. If i attempt to go heavy to soon I'll possible get an injury. I love every bit of Arnold's mentality and training. I too have the book. Before learning of Arnold's ways I already started on my own doing it like that. So once I seen and read the book I felt that this is what works for me. If i stick to the work outs I 100% get results from it. I think if you listen to Arnold, watch his videos. All the secrets are there. his confidence, mentality and work ethic. King of kings.

You basically got to fool your muscles shock them and fool them. You change up your diet and you change up your routine when you work out. I mean you always eat healthy but you don't need the same food you eat different foods, you work out but you do different workouts and then you change it back up and then you do different weights and different sets different reps that's just how you can change it also. You're going to have to lift heavy sometimes to get more muscle. Will be days where you don't want to lift heaven you want to lift light and that's fine. I know a lot of guys that lift light they do more reps. But I think just cuz you lift light and do more reps you're going to have to lift heavy and do less reps is what it's comes down to. It's just a lifestyle change the rest of your life you got to change your lifestyle healthy lifestyle to get where you need to be and stay.

Hi Jeff, love the videos and want to get started on your program soon (currently in pre-prep for that! :). Question: I saw Jason Statham recently do a 66 press-up a day challenge. He did them in sets of 22, with massive speed and explosiveness, also springing his hands off the ground with each one. What are the benefits, if any, of doing them like that, compared to what I normally do which is an explosive (as possible) push up with a slower, longer time under tension return down to restart? Thanks. I don't even know if I'm posting this anywhere you'll see it, but maybe someone has an idea on that. Cheers, Andy

Arnold is the greatest but I don't think he followed those workouts in the Encyclopedia. In -Education of a Bodybuilder- he says he started with bodyweight and freehand exercises and iirc he was an Olympic weightlifter. Most 5x5 workouts say Arnold did them because Reg Park did. Then there's IronMan's article by Arnold with Gene Mozee

Arnold didn-t take steroids because back then they didn-t know they were dangerous; he took very low dosages under doctor supervision because they were legal. Steroids don-t always kill you, they-re just rampantly abused right now because they-re illegal. Only if they were legal, would people be able to administer them safely.

I love what you said about negative people. Every time someone doubts my ability to reach my goals, I just see someone who didn-t have the drive to do it themselves, and they don-t want to see someone else succeed where they failed. It actually just drives me harder when somebody doubts me or tries to discourage me.

I call that the basics of bodybuilding. I believe the #1 motivation for men and women is VANITY. I do believe in Vanity, but the key is not to let it consume you. We all want to look our best, but our looks are only superficial and mostly temporary. Look your best at all ages, but do not fight to age. Thanks Jeff!
