Wondering what body fat percentage you have to be at to see six pack abs? Today I show examples of how having a 6, 8, 10 or 12% body fat percentage does not guarantee visible ab definition. This is a video that I wanted to do for a while because this 12% myth has spread all over the internet and now you have a bunch of people that might have never even been under 12% body fat claiming that you need to get under 12% to see your abs. The YouTube Community especially, seems to be convinced that 12% is the number to be at to see a six pack. I'm here today to tell you that this is completely untrue and it's a total myth. I'm not sure why or when 12% was picked as the definitive number to seeing a six pack, but I do know that associating six pack abs with a certain percentage of body fat is totally flawed. One reason why we can't say that a certain percentage is going to equal abs is because the way that your body distributes its body fat varies dramatically from person to person. One person can store most of their body fat in their thighs and hips while another person can store the majority of their body fat over their abdomen. I've personally trained thousands of people with all different body fat percentages. And a lot of my clients that were actually really lean still could not see their abs. In fact even my business partner dropped his body fat to 8 percent after dieting for 16 weeks and still could not see six pack abs. Meanwhile I've done bulking phases where I was eating an insane amount of calories and I was weighing in at like 230lbs, yet I could still see visible AB definition on top of my stomach that would be full of food. That's because I hold a lot of my fat in my lower body. My fat is mostly Stored in my hips love handles and upper thighs. Meanwhile his fat is predominately stored in his belly so even when he dropped down to 8% he still couldn't see his abs. And I know for a fact that I've had points where ive been well above 14% And still have had great ab definition. Again this all has to do with fat distribution and not with the number that you get from mostly inaccurate body fat devices. So that's actually another thing. Most body fat testing methods are totally flawed. Even the dexa scan which is supposed to be one of the most accurate ways to scan your body fat can be completely off and I've demonstrated this in another video. If you're using calipers, or formulas based on measurements, or bioelectrical impedance forget about it, there's so much room for error, you're going to be at least three to four percent off. Due to inaccurate measurements alone. you can't count on your body fat percentage to tell you when you're going to see those abs. The good news is that as long as you use the same body fat device the change over time should be pretty accurate. So if you're using for example a scale to determine your body fat, the initial reading probably will be inaccurate and so will the final reading but the change over time should be pretty accurate. However again this does not help you identify a definitive body fat percentage that will lead to visible abs. The last thing that this 12% body fat myth completely ignores is that to see your abs you have to build up the muscle. Abs. are muscles. There's not just a magic six pack sitting under everyone's belly fat. Unfortunately that's not how it works. First of all everyone's abs are shaped differently due to different genetics. So one guy might burn away the belly fat from his abs and find very defined symmetrical six pack looking ab muscles while another guy might burn off the same fat but because his abs are shaped differently they're not going to look as defined and symmetrical. Like I said ABS are muscles. So if you have one guy that has worked his abs very well with Progressive resistance training workouts and you have another guy that does a couple crunches here and there the guy that worked on his abs with weights is going to have a lot more blocky visible abs than the other guy as long as his genetics arent horrible. Which is actually totally a real possibility. There are some people that don't work out at all and have ripped six packs only because of good muscle building genetics and a good distribution of body fat. Now you have to understand that this is the truth because for me as a trainer it does me no good to tell people that ABS aren't as easy to acquire for some as they are for others

yeah 12% was the number i was told to cut to. the body fat chase and really just being focused on getting lean/getting abs has been so frustrating. i have loose skin so even 6'2 170lb i still look like im at 30% body fat (while simultaneously starting to look gaunt and sickly) even though callipers, digital scale, and measurements stay 14% ish. so im at the point now where im just gonna eat at maintenance and lift, and maybe raise calories til im gaining 2-3lb per month to minimize fat gain. chasing +5 lb to my squat, and wanting to get buff VS coming from fat boy mentality and wanting to be skinny seems far more healthy, sustainable, plus i get to feast so its better for sanity: D and knowing how these things tend to go, ill end up seeing more ab definition by bulking and lifting and not thinking about it than i will by eating 1600 calories a day for 8 months.

The problem is that I had a six pack by accident when I was 17 / 18. So I feel that its a waste of genetics to stay fat, because I know compared to others it would be relatively easy for me to achieve this. I also know they are very symetric which again gives me a reason to do my crunches. But yeah Its summer with bbqs and lots of beer, so Im just gonna start in september when the cheatdays go down from 3/4 every week, to 1 every one or two weeks I dont mind eating healthy and counting calories when Im alone, but when Im out with friends Im not gonna be the guy thats on a diet and just enjoy myself. Abs arent worth missing a party. Im at 22% bodyfat now, had 29% three months ago, so still going down steady, I feel I also have a lot more stored in my legs and hips then my belly, so thats nice.

I think abs would start to being besible between 10 and 15% body fat depending on how big your muscles are, but they just say 12% as a magic number because most people will have visible abs at this point without any specific training, just with regular sports like soccer, if you dont have abs at 10-12% body fat, you should probably focus more on the gym because even if you get abs, you dont look good at all without any chest

I would say the 12% thing runs totally true on me. and I store like ALL my fat in my belly. I am 15 percent now and I have like a great ripped 4 pack with going on with the tiniest pouch on the bottom. I will deff have that gone at 12 percent. this might not run true for everyone but the 12 percent is 100 percent true in my case. This is prolly not a rule for everyone but Id bet it applies for most

A true 12% definitely means visible abdominal definition. Maybe not a dexa 12% but a true 12% is very lean. Pretty much everyone will have decent ab definition at 12%. People Underestimate how much fat they carry and place way too much faith in fat measuring tools which are usually very inaccurate.

I've had my BF I measured twice in the last 2 months and both times I was at 3% body fat. You cannot see my entire six pack because of all the loose skin from weight loss. There is no magic cure to this just more hard work and the gym and good nutrition.

im 9 % body fat, and my i still dont have a flat stomach, that beacuse all of my fat is stored in the belly and tighs and i dont have any visceral fat. i think it's true that low body fat percentage does not always mean six pack and flat stomach.

Honestly I dont care about seeing abs
If I can get to where I can see my feet I would be happy honestly your supposed to see your feet right yeah I thought so. Yeah seeing my feet would make me happy seeing abs is just vain to me.

There is not a single person in the history of mankind that has been below 10% body fat and not seen their abs. You are full of shit or you just have no clue what youre talking about
reply

8% and no visible abs? Bull. There's no way. If you can't see you're abs at 8% then you aren't 8%. I agree 12% isn't the magic number. Mine come in at 16% or so, but still.
