Being over forty doesn t mean you have to lift light weight, take up jogging, and forget the days of intense training. To the contrary, you can still kill it in the gym, build muscle, and achieve a top tier physique. If you ve hit forty and are still marching off to the gym most days of the week, then you re already ahead of the curve. You will, however, need to take some precautions. With that said, here are seven of the worst muscle building mistakes men over 40 make and how to avoid them so you can continue progressing in the gym.

Congratulations on the video! Especially helpful! Hopefully, everyone above 35 will keep this advice in mind (not only those above 40. Everyone is different, but I am suggesting that from my personal experience in doing some of these mistakes that led me to several injuries after the age of 35. Unfortunately, being at 45 now, I am still doing some. I recently woke up my carpal tunnel syndrome after many years, due to overtraining of my wrists in pushing exercises. Everyone knows it sucks when an injury restricts you from doing what you want. So the main goal is to stay injury-free in order to be possible to keep training as you age. Stay healthy and injury-free! Thank you once again for another useful video!

Most of the time I agree with and use the information in these videos but for this one I have to disagree all of the points were in fact valid but being over 40 or any age for that matter doesn't mean anything human bodies work the same way no matter how old you are muscles and joints don't work any differently at 40 than at 20 or 30 or 15 or 90 so if you are healthy your body will function and adapt as always and as far as pain or discomfort is concerned lifting weights for the purpose of building muscle is actually damaging the tissue so of course there's going to be some soreness

I just hit 40 5 weeks ago and I can't believe I can now watch fitness videos of men over 40. Makes me feel old now.
I already made one of the mistakes while watching the before and before it came up: comparing yourself to others. I look at image of shirtless celebrities on my digital image frame and compare my ugly fatness to their godlike bodies and feel low about myself. If you compare yourself to other people that are better, you're just going to feel bad about yourself. Don't do it.

Great topic! I'm 44 train on a 4 day split with steady state fasted cardio every morning. The key is discipline and consistency. I train in the 12-15 rep range, moderate weight, slow tempo, squeeze, mind/muscle connection. Every meal is weighed and tracked. Minimum of 7 hours sleep a night. On busy days I'll even catch a 25 minute power nap before hitting the gym while my pre workout meal digests. At 44 I'm in the best shape of my life.

sleeping is my biggest issue since 20s. can sleep average 5-6hrs week days and longer on weekends, but still i can't catch up with 8hrsx7days per week. so much in my plate that i can't get to bed 10pm and need to wake up 5am. usually in bed around 11 and takes time to fall as sleep

Hey I am 60. No problems with training intensely 5 to 6 times a week. No problems with staying lean. Believe me, it's all about food, training and rest. I don't feel different then 30 years ago. Oh. and I work full time. Don't over complicate things is my advise.

I m 45 and train every day of the week. I feel great and still enjoying that beer on the weekend with friends. Exercise is a lifestyle not just to look good at summer, is to feel great every day for the rest of our lives.

Get hurt at 40+ and you could be out for a month or more. Lift heavy but be conservative with your progress. Be patient and you will improve. Use the wrong form and you'll hurt yourself.

The worst muscle building mistake is simply not going to the gym after 40. Stay active and healthy. Longevity is a blessing.
