What s the best way to build muscle: free weights or machines? Well, it depends. Ultimately, this comes down to your goals, training experience and past injuries. For example, if you re over 40 and you ve been training for a while, you may find that doing heavy sets of deadlifts or back squats simply isn t worth the risk, and there are better options that suit your goals without stressing your joints. In this video, we go over the pros and cons of both free weights and machines, and take a look at the current evidence to determine which one is best for muscle growth. Mike: 55 Years old here and I can still do ass to grass squats. Here or there I get some shoulder pain. Some tennis elbow. But I do other exercises to help fix those issues. At this age I still enjoy lifting as I always have. And I'd rather keep lifting than give up and start getting pains or injuries

Another thing to consider is that using free weights will take longer to increase weight if you don t have a trainer or workout buddy. That has been my issue. I m less likely to push myself with free weights because I don t want to end up on someone s video having a gym fail. So I go to the machines as a first option.

As a 45, what should we do if we have crunchy joints? No pain, just it's like I got rice crispy treats for knees.
I do three sets of ten, with just a 10lb weight for squats.
