What happens If you hold your breath while scuba diving and freediving alucard: Well guess Im lucky i didnt die. Came here looking for ways to equalize my ears as i saw in another one of his vids and figured id give this a look i just recently started free-diving/snorkeling in the Florida springs with zero experience, fins, snorkel and etc was going into underwater caves 40-60 feet under with immense pain in my ears because i didnt know how to equalize still havent really got much to any practice yet. But i guess Im lucky i didnt rupture a lung because i was taking deep breaths and going down more worried about my ears lol. But hey now i know and i didnt have to die to figure it out so thanks for that

First of all, when scuba diving you have a regulator mouthpiece in your mouth so you can not seal your lips shut and make your lungs a sealed air pocket that way. You can close your airway by contracting muscles in your throat but most people don't even think about that. The only time you should, as you say, exhale all the way through your ascent is when you're making a CESA (Controlled Emergency Safety Ascent. On normal ascents you just breathe normal. If a diver panics at depth, spits the regulator out and bolters to the surface, a well placed punch in the stomach can save them from damaging their lungs.

Not Please take a certification course if you're going to SCUBA. Take the course! :D At the very least participate in a 1: 1 Learn to Dive, Intro to SCUBA, etc. where you are basically within arms reach of a certified instructor who has constant control of you and your BCD, plus you're not going any deeper than 35ft/10m.

can i breathe with the snorkel on the surface and then I go down to 5 meters holding my breath and then I use the spare air to stay a little longer, because if i understand, is like in freedive, you have to expare your air when you go up to the surface?
reply

So your oxygen runs out you hold your breath then you go up blowing out slowly on the way up so your lungs don't blow up got it I suppose the same would be from freediving meeting a scuba diving and borrowing his oxygen

Does the volume of water affects pressure in diving deep? for example a 5x5 pool which is 100m deep with 1k gallons of sea water vs 100m deep ocean with tons of seawater. Will it influence pressure? Why Or why not?

What if I am under the water already, in a submarine for example, I hold my breath, jump out of the sub and move up to the surface, will my lungs rupture if I don't breathe out as well? I'm assuming so
reply

Yeah, on my first practice dive, uh, we were practicing doing an emergency dive, and uh, I forgot to release air while going up. thankfully I didnt have to go to a decompression chamber.

This confused me a bit so is it safe to go down and up in one breath without free diving and have no risk of rupturing your lugs or is that just a danger when your scuba diving with a tank
reply

I kept hearing 'when you die' instead of 'when you dive' because your Norwegian accent has unvoiced 'v' sounds, haha. I'm like 'yeah, well, that can happen when you get the bends!
reply

I was taught that if you make a rapid ascent and your tank is empty, you are to literally yell while going up quickly to let the air out without bursting your lungs.

Thats weird ive always been in the habit of letting air out as I ascend and i dont even scuba dive or use scuba gear so i imagine thats a good habit if i did ever do that
reply

The only thing Im really curious about is do you exhale before reaching the surface and if so at what point should you start exhaling so your lungs dont rupture?
reply

If Im building a sort of makeshift breathing contraption for a pool (around 1. 5m) would I need to exhale to ascend? Or is it shallow enough to be safe
reply

I'm 14 years old, and Go Diving since 7 Years. And i know i could be Dangerous, but it's nice Being weightless and breathing underwater.
