Good to know, this is what I need to work on.
Two reasons I dislike freestyle swimming
1) My eyes get red in water pool or fresh or ocean water. I really don't like opening my eyes under water. goggles still get water in them. And it's kind of dangerous to be over reliant on goggles.
2) My breathing sucks. if I keep swimming for long periods, and don't focus on when I breath. it's almost inevitable, at some point I inhale a mouth full of water LOL! And popup chocking and gagging. I'm decent at wading so I'm fine. but it's not pleasant.
Thanks for the tips! Will practice them soon.
Need to be able to freestyle decently in order to use the laps at the gym. even though I just swim for the exercise and generally do swimming with head above the water doggy paddle style. I don't like sticking my face in the water.

I like holding a huge breath of air because it creates buoyancy
Very quickly exhaling and huge intake and holding again
Trying all the time to breathe less.
This allows me to keep my head down and the bulge of my back to be like a dolphins.
The gliding is more important than the propulsion.
The propulsion must just be as smooth and strong as your fitness develops
Having mastered that
I then swim as fast as possible to build strength in the muscles and the endurance just follows naturally.
I love the open sea with the buoyancy of salt water and the long stretch without the turns

What a great and surprising advice. I was always told that I shoud get rid of the oxygen that was transformed in Co2 in the process. I tried your technique yesterday and I felt great power. Not only because I could float better, but also because in the short time that I kept the air it did certainly not have time to become toxic. I had to learn to exhale powerfully at the end to be able to grab enough fresh air, but, as you mentioned, we do not need much for such a short period. This technique helped me a lot with the butterfly swimming where I was always out of breath. Thank you so much!

I disagree with your method. Holding the breath will lead to elevated CO2, and the swimmer will begin to tire, as the body craves more Oxygen, this distracts the swimmer from their stroke, and raises anxiety in the water.
The key is to relax, and breath out through both nose and mouth through the stroke, timing the inhale with the rotation.
For years I struggled with distance swimming with freestyle, due to CO2 build up through breath holding and explosive O2 exchange.
Moving to a natural breathing rythm provides space, to relax and consider your stroke.

This has been such a game changer for me. After taking up triathlon and swimming for two years I was still struggling to stay out of the red. First time I tried this method - boom! I just swam and swam, 2k straight off the bat with no breaks. For me the buoyancy aspect makes total sense, plus I get to fully exhale with that combination of nose and mouth. Combine this with his smooth swimming technique and its transformative.

as a freediver i'm used to that quick inhale and slow exhale rythm but i think your technic makes sense, dolphins and whales blow air just right before they surface to help clean their blowhole before they inhale air, so i think it's efficient way to breath
tho i remember thinking that actualy exhaling as i swim helps with my balance because if my chest is too buoyant my legs sink

Guys how about;
1) Quick breath
2) pump exhale Vai nose to avoid water entry while turning head back in
3) HOLD
4) Blast 2-3 Huge bubbles from mouth
5) Pump exhale remaining air by nose while turning back up to avoid water entering nose.
If any better alternatives let me know as if I don't exhale with my nose while my head is turning water goes in 100% for me.

When it comes to breathing underwater, Im confused. Is it better to breathe largely through your nose, followed by breathing little through your mouth? I breathe via both my mouth and nose at the same time. This improves my flow in the pool and, most importantly, in the sea. Thank you for the wonderful videos. Keep up the excellent work. Greetings from Brazil.

I had similar realization practicing free style using snorkel. If my body isnt horizontal, it becomes hard to rotate upper body. If i let out air bubble slowing under water, I wouldnt have enough to breathe out water in the nose before breathing in. I love your explanation and drills. Will use them in the pool to get a good habit going.

One thing is confusing to me - exhale through the mouth when rote the head? - This is acually the moment when this little amount of water in the nose getting deeper if I don't push it away by exhaling through the nose. So when I rotate the head I should exhale throught the noce - not the mouth.

so conclusion is
exhale (not quickly, not slowly, but just on the rythm of 3 strikes) underwater through the nostrils, and one more time a last quick exhale through the mouth when opening it above just before taking a quick inhale (by the mouth)

as i beginner level swimmer, i can see that most beginners including me cannot do the quick breath. The time is simply not enough and CO2 will build up over time. Actually, the only way that I can swim is through breathing out in the water constantly.

Thanks for nice explanation, still I have challange, after I return my head to have breath, whenever I insert my face in the water I feel as something going to catch my breath, my question is what should I do exactly after having breath?

the breathing test: i quickly breath then started to exhale, midway i was thinking i had too much air still, so i started exhaling much more. the guy stopped at 15s i continued 5 more or so - while swimming i already breathe like this: -)

Nope! Tried it, I always get water in my mouth (and chlorine, no practical tips here, also its impossible to do that thing with my nose that he says water goes in which is even worse. (A nose clip helps)
A click bait video for sure
