Georgetown Loop Railroad - Fun for the WHOLE Family! Fernweh Chronicles

Travel back in time with us on the Georgetown Loop Railroad through the Rocky Mountains out of Georgetown, Colorado. This is a magical family friendly activity, and is a perfect day trip from Denver! You can board the train either in Georgetown or Silver Plume. If you are heading West from Denver you will come to Georgetown first. You can also -add on- a mining tour which will have you hop off the train about half way between each town. After your tour, you-ll take the next train back! A bit of history about the railroad that we discuss in the vlog: In the early 1900s the rise of the automobile lead to a dramatic reduction in train excursions, which resulted in large revenue losses. In 1938 the Denver to Silver Plume line stopped operations and the Georgetown Loop was dismantled, marking the end of an era. The Georgetown loop went operational again in 1984 with the completion of the Devil-s Gate High Bridge replica, right in time for its 100 year anniversary. The 4. 5 mile long track winds through the mountainous terrain with trestles, cuts, fills and a grand loop. It goes from Georgetown to Silver Plume and back again (or vice versa) during which it ascends an elevation of 640 feet. The engine is a Shay locomotive of which there are only 118 remaining. The engine Nr. 9, we-re riding today, is a class C engine with three cylinders, three trucks and weights between 40 and 160 tons. It has been in operation with the Georgetown loop since Chris: I remember this exact day. I had only been working at the Loop for a few months. I was assigned as Brakeman that day, and I too was in awe of the Shay. It was the first time #9 was running during the 2018 season. I felt so flustered when I was asked to yell -All Aboard- in front of the camera. Steam locomotive #111 running most days in summer 2019. I'm so glad that the Fernweh family had such a great time, and I hope that they come back to ride again.

I highly recommend doing this if you're in the area. I got the ticket that included the mine tour which was also very interesting. I've stayed in Georgetown once to summit Grays and Torreys Peaks and again to get Mt. Bierstadt. Getting a 14er is always more fun followed by a warm shower, a cool room and some good restaurant food.

Quick question. isn-t this illegal to fly a drone in that area because of the national park aspect?

In 2002 we took the Vette from Houston up to Denver, then up to Georgetown, and road this trian. Not much else to do there. Good times.
