Anna Maria Island, FL - 7 Miles of Paradise Clearwater St. Pete and Sarasota, ive lived for many years. First attending college in Sarasota living on siesta key beach, then later living and working out of clearwater and tampa, all this from the mid 90s to the early 2ks, Back then much of the area was well off peoples radar. People were still more interested in heading to the big cities. But these areas were secret gems. with all the talk of people hating florida, i was enjoying Americas absolute best locations. Paradise a well kept secret. Tampa was known, but Tampa like St. Pete was going thru a muted phase. St. Pete had died down from its more active time in the early 80s. But things were slowly but surely picking up. Not to say anything was wrong with all it had to offer. Same goes for Sarasota. Here was a place liken to the oysters pearl. The place once well know for grey haired snow bunnies retirees. That age had long passed, and the town went into a sleepy mode. Business also was slowly picking up, but all it had to offer was far beyond anything found elsewhere in the US. And at the time. the cost of living was dirt cheap. But then. like the trickle of a faucet, one by one, people came to visit, or vacation, and fully understood the value. The place was a gold mine. As such. it became common that people flew in, loved it so much they literally would quit their jobs, find a place to buy, and have their items shipped down, all without taking a chance in leaving. And so. that whole region vastly grew. I do miss the old times, the place was all that it is now but with far less annoying people but its still incredibly nice. still among the few places in the US worth settling down in.

For over 20 years we've rented various places on the island for 6 to 8 weeks in winter, and what we have appreciated is that it has resisted overcommercialization - with varying success. It's not an amusement park, though there's plenty to do there. The miles of continuous beach are all open to the public, so even on a sultry Sunday afternoon you can find empty space and solitude on the sand - if you have a place to park. The traffic on Gulf Drive becomes impossible from 11: 00AM to 6: 00 PM, but after sunset (which is often thrilling to see) everything quiets down. Our very favorite restaurant is The Feast in Holmes Beach, walkable from our favorite rental house in a quiet enclave on 51st St.

I was born right in Blake hospital in Bradenton so this is my home. I've swam in those waters more times than I can count. It hurt me so much when I read a couple years ago that even more of the natural land and plant life was being destroyed just to build another god damn parking lot.
I guess the song Big Yellow Taxi sums it up best:
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique, and a swinging hot spot
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got 'til it's gone
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot

It's a shame the island is all built up on now. It should have been kept as a natural nature preserve. And why would anyone want to live in a dangerous low-lying area like that because if a hurricane hits and there's a high surge it would all be flooded. There are way too many people living in Florida and it's the 4th most populated state and is now very expensive to live there. $125 to $165 to take a horse ride So much greed and corruption there now too taking advantage of tourists.

We've been coming here in March & April for about 20 years. The island was once a quiet retreat. It's now an over crowded nightmare. If you like traffic that barely moves, non-stop construction noise, lawn care people running trimmers & leaf blowers, kids yelling & screaming in swimming pools and exorbitant rental costs, this is the place for you. If you're looking for a quiet place to enjoy a relaxing vacation, keep looking.

Sad what happened to this city. Taking such a beautiful location and turning it into such a party spot should be a crime. The kids drinking on the beach and in the ocean, constant traffic, and the rising cost of rentals with decreasing quality. The locations are all being bought by rental company’s and the cleanliness and quality maintenance is suffering. It’s terrible and the council should be ashamed

Anna Maria can be magical but you need a helicopter to get there these days. The roads are a nightmare and will be for the foreseeable future. If you plan to vacation there, don't plan on leaving until you leave. It truly is a problem that Manatee County has yet to solve. They are all a good old boy network and so don't hold your breath waiting for them to solve anything.

No doubt a beautiful place, but OMG, the traffic! Coming in on Manatee Blvd from downtown Bradenton is always an endless stream of bumper-to-bumper traffic. Then, once you get onto the island, pretty much the same thing. Bumper to bumper, creeping and crawling. I guess if you came here for a week, parked your car and walked everywhere, it would be tolerable.

Love the video! Always watch this when I’m missing my second home. Me and my family have been vacationing from Kentucky to the island on and off since 2005. It’s truly a beautiful and amazing place with great people! And the food is amazing! Beach house and the city pier are our favorite places to grab some food! Haven’t been back since 2016 unfortunately.

I grew up going to visit my grandparents here on AMI. Have amazing memories, thank you for bringing back some of my childhood nostalgia. I hope to get back here one day. It looks a lot more built up from what I remember! I used to get grouper sandwiches at the Bridge Street Pier, sounds like they changed to an Oyster bar. Thanks again!

This place is my second home. We are from Minnesota and come down multiple times a year always renting a new house but hopefully soon we can purchase our own place in the beautiful island. I've been going here ever since 2010 and it feels like home. I know my way around the island like it's home and I just love the place.

You forgot to mention it's not the nice little quiet island it use to be. Very busy year-round with tourist. Locals are forgotten; prices at restaurants are very high they know they can over price menus because the tourist will pay the price. Not ALL restaurants are just interested in over charging tourist but most are.

Best beach in Florida, bar none! Thank you for posting. I went a couple of years ago, but plan on returning in April to take my man and my baby this round. Will be little man's first beach trip at 18 months, we are so excited!

we used to go to Pete Renards for Sunday dinner when I was a kid, we sat in the revolving dining area, if you went to the restroom, you came back and your parents moved

Just returned home from this beach. I’m a Gulf Coast freak and never been past the panhandle where the water is clear emerald green, but Santa Maria has ice blue water. GORGEOUS!

Stop saying Bradington Beach. It's Bradenton, not Bradington. You also say Beach Street pier- it's Bridge Street pier. No more Bradington! There is no such place.

You should go out of your comfort zone more so you could understand why it has not made the list. There are plenty of more beautiful places right in your backyard.

I lived on Anna Maria Island over 40yrs ago when it was quiet, much less crowded and not well known. It's a beautiful place but was much nicer before it was discovered.

There is no Paradise in Florida! This state sucks the big one. Awful, not friendly, people. And way too expensive!
