Heading to the Airport? Have a long layover? Here are the Best & Worst Parts of having a layover. Whether it is the ability to go visit a city for a few hours or having to eat overpriced overcooked food layovers can be the best or the worst. Flying is fun. Layovers not always the same

I always bring my kindle, mp3 player, a water bottle and things to put in my water (powdered, plenty of snacks, and a meal from home if I'll be in the air or airport during mealtime. And I always make sure my devices are fully charged before I leave for the airport. and I bring a power bank just in case something gets low/dies (and the one and only cord I need that will fit all 3 devices.
I hate really long layovers (for me, that's anything over 4 hours - I avoid them whenever possible because it just makes my travel day longer - and thus more exhausting - and I still get to my destination at the exact same time I would have if I had gone for a 2 1/2 hr layover, but ones shorter than 4 hours I don't mind - mine usually end up being 2-3 1/2 hrs: enough time to get from one gate to the next (can take quite a bit longer than a lot of people because I'm in a wheelchair, and it sometimes entails changing terminals, with time to still use the restroom, fill my water bottle, make sure everything's hunky dory with the gate agent regarding my wheelchair and the next flight, get settled at the gate, have a snack, and listen to part of an audiobook, before I get called for pre-boarding. Oh, and it allows for the insanely horrible communication delays between the transporter team supervisor and their team (at least at DEN, making me wait at my arrival gate for sometimes up to half an hour before getting there to push me to my next gate.

I agree with Naked Soul on Changi Airport in Singapore (makes a long layover bearable) SO many free entertainment and sightseeing options, actually in the airport. They offer a free 2-4 hour bus tour too (if I'm not mistaken. Also the Incheon Airport in Seoul offers free access to showers (with free toiletries and even hair dryer use) which can be soooo refreshing and needed too, lol! If you have time and some US$60 or so to spend, they have an awesome spa as well with great therapists and a variety of relaxing treatments. Incheon also has awesome wifi access too - comes in handy you have work to do or movies to stream.

I NEVER get bored in layovers. I love to walk around and watch people. I love exploring the airport. I love to relax on a chair near a big window and watch the planes landing or taking off or just taxiing. I don't have to eat anything I'll survive for a few hours (I do intermittent fasting I'm used to it. About gate changes you don't have to watch it all the time. About an hour before your flight it's a good time to search for your gate. Besides there are apps nowadays that you upload your flight and the app notifies you about the changes, f. e I use FLIO! I love Copenhagen airport. It's my favorite!

I have booked a long layover to visit some cities. Did this several times in NYC when I had family there. Also got to visit Boston and Atlanta this way.
I also enjoy having a good meal during a layover IND is my home airport and I love to eat at Shapiro's or Harry & izzy's. At ATL it is hard to beat One Flew South or Ecco for a nice meal, or for cheaper eats that are still amazing Paschal's fits the bill. Shoyu at MSP, Bar Symon at CLE. leo's Coney island at DTW. or look for a shake shake as they seem to be adding lots of airport locations.

I will be visiting italy next April 2022. I have a 19hr layover at Heathrow Airport. This is a trip of a lifetime that I am extremely grateful to be doing. I hope to do more travel also. I hope I never get jaded enough wth traveling that a layover annoys me. I feel like this long layover is like a mini-trip in itself. I'm going to explore the airport and hopefully see a few sights close by. I just look at this pitstop as the cherry on top of a European trip I've been looking forward to my whole life.

One of my favourite things to in airports, even though I don't care about fashion is find a shop selling sunglasses and try lots on at the same time and turn them upside down, just to look silly and have a laugh, it's especially fun with someone else. That is what long layovers at the airport reduce humans to. That's when I'm just completely bored of watching planes, which does take quite a long time but can happen

You're right about that quick peek at a new city/country. I flew to New Zealand in 2018. I've had a 5-hour layover in Tahiti. I didn't leave the airport but there was a viewing terrace on the second floor. I've had a chance to see a sunrise, and the Moorea island, in the distance. It's a breath-taking view. I kind of promised to myself I should go back to Tahiti, some day. I'm going there next year!

I once got stuck in Malaysia for 10 hours waiting for my flight home! My folks flight back to China went first then my bro's flight to Italy went and then there was me and EVERYWHERE closed, it was the middle of the night at this point, I didn't speak the language it was horrible. lessons were learnt: -) thank GOODNESS for my shakespeare book and my Sudoku book

I find long layovers less stressful. A few years ago we had a layover in Beijing and it took 3. 5 hours of standing in lines just to get off the plane we landed in, and get through security and into the outbound international airport. Without an 8 hour stop over that would have been so stressful. As it was there were a lot of frustrated people!
