He's mistaken about food. I bring back cheese from France every time I go. Virtually all cheese shops have the means to hermetically seal the cheese to preserve it. Once, I was stopped by some newbie customs folks who weren't sure what to do and who had me speak with their office people who asked me, Why did they send you to us? and then shook their heads and said, No problem. Also, don't waste your money on expensive electric transformers to convert current from Europe's 220 to US 110. Essentially all electronic gear, pc's, cell phones, tablets have auto-discriminating internal electronics which sense the current and will accept either. You only need plug converters because the plug sizes are different.

Buy yourself anything you want. If you want cheap things that you'll throw away in awhile, buy them. just don't buy them for other people. Don't be afraid to say 'no' to people. When you're in London can you buy me. Nope. I'll decide what I'm going to buy, who to buy it for and if I haven't seen it in the thrift store I worked in. Before you travel, go to a thrift shop, you can buy your friends a LOT of brand new things from there and they'll never know. Everyone donates souvenirs to thrift shops.

Let's agree to that upfront, so I don't lose on this. I will give you a receipt and the change. Just to make it easy for you, I will give you the change in Canadian dollars, instead of the local currency.
I guarantee you that they will stare for a moment. Then they shut up, and never mention it again.

I like collecting the miniature liqour bottles i buy them at local liquor stores and duty free I dont drink them but every guest that comes over looks at the bottles and admire them and i do have relatives abroad but i never tell them Im going to visit because theyll have amazon orders sent to my house and have me bring them those orders I dont have room for those orders nor do i feel like paying excess bag fees like i did one time because of my relatives orders.

I bought a beautiful wooden carved ChessMen set in a wooden box when I was in Netherlands. This is one of the best presents that I gave myself.
Even now I remember the purchase vividly. I was in a Sunday Market. And this chess set caught my eyes. An elderly polish lady was selling this. Both of us did know a common language. Managed to communicate and haggle with her using hand gestures. Now I have a cherished possession.

I tend to get things that are unique to the areas I go.
One of them are the soccer scarves - what I have done is gotten a frame and framed them. So scarves from Manchester, Barcelona, Dublin, Milan, Madrid, etc. on display.
I also get tin signs like I have one from Guinness Brewery or Barcelona License Plate.
I tend to travel light for those reasons.
My mistake is a giant Mexican hat I got in Mexico

My Mom don't know much about flying and packed for me stuff like Sausage, Bread and a few Apples in my luggage. I don't knew this till a officer in New York stopped me and said Please open your Luggage. He throw this food in a a trash can and i can go. It was'nt fun. Greetings from Germany: -)

I have 3 collections from my travels. 1) atlesst 1 currency note from each country (minus countries that use the same currency like the EU or central African Frank.
2) A patch from each country (if possible.
3) a growing collection if hand made knifes. I have a knife from Sweden, Switzerland (of course, Philippines, Nepal and Uzbekistan.

I think scarves are a great item to buy abroad, especially if they are from a local market, bonus points if they're handmade. They travel well and come in all colors and patterns. My sister bought me a scarf while she was in Ireland and whenever I wear it I think of her. It's a practical item that is also beautiful, lightweight and affordable!

I buy a lot of magnets and i organize them in a magnet board /cabinet. Every morning i see them in my breakfast room and they make me happy. The magnets are not thrown away after 6 months. It all depends on the buyer if he/she really likes them. If they love the vheap magnets, then they collect them and treasure them forever
