I really wish that there was more attention to this passport rule. My wife and I just had our Euro vacation ruined, due to not only personal ignorance about the rule, but also ignorance and negligence on many of the Air Canada staff that we encountered. In good Wolter's World format, here are.
6 Places Where This Could Have Been Prevented, But Was Not
1. The Passport. Nothing in the passport mentions this rule, cautions the use of it towards the end of its life, or even hints at something like the rules existence. I know every country may differ, but the more I looked into the rule, it was almost a ubiquitous Yes you need to have XX months before
2. The ticket vendor. At no point in the purchase of my ticket to The Netherlands was I asked to submit a passport expiration date.
3. The electronic passport scanner at the first airport we went to (MSP. Again, if the rule is almost ubiquitous, it might be a good place to raise a red flag.
4. The Air Canada ticketing agent who issued our boarding passes. At no point did his examination of our passports mention this detail. Nor did anything come up as he ran our passports through another kind of electronic passport reader.
5. The first gate attendant who checked our passports and boarding passes before we got on the flight to Canada. Apparently, this is where it should have been caught Canada also has a rule!
6. The Canadian customs agent who looked over our passports as we entered that country. He questioned us about all kinds of matters, and took a somewhat lengthy look through our passports. Nothing about dates came up.

Drinking on holiday is fun (local bar scene, traditional drinks, fun people, etc) and yes, it's great not driving if you're without a car. But as Mark says, be smart because the local criminal element targets drunk tourists.
1 - Plan so your last stop is next to your hotel. You won't get lost walking home or using public trans and catching a taxi at 2AM often results in overcharging if you're obviously drunk.
2 - Some tourist bars are known for bill padding so if you're drunk you may not notice or can't defend. Be aware. A good idea is to pay for every drink/round as you go.
3 - Don't get drunk carrying all you junk around (shopping bags, backpacks, camera equipment, etc) to prevent leaving something at the bar. I drop off everything at the hotel and carry only a copy of my ID, the cash I'm going to spend for the night and my phone.
4 - Finally, the next day hangover. Who wants to tour the Grand Palace or walk the Champs-Elysees or sunbathe on Bondi Beach feeling like heck?

hey Mark. Here's a question for when you get a chance. My son has met some people from around the world on his many travels. When it comes to them coming to visit the U. S. (longer visits since the travel-distance is extensive, some have found that they are having trouble getting a visitor's visa. This is a shock to me - but hey, I live here.
For those who might have out-of-the-country friends and acquaintances - - could you do a video on traveling TO the U. S. from outside countries. And what WE (as their intended hosts) might need to know about their (possible) travels to come see us?

Me, watching waaaaaay to early in the morning: There's a town called Savannah in [the European nation] Georgia? Cool.
My bad (for a moment or so, but there are way too many places in the US that share names with other places around the world. :P
Regarding the video itself: I like these sort of Q&A videos. I wouldn't mind seeing more of them. While I personally don't travel as much now as I used to, I still really like the concept of answering some general questions about travelling without tying it to any specific country. So keep up the good work. :)

Another consideration is this. If you require medical attention as a result of an under the influence of alcohol accident, many travel insurance policies will not cover your expenses. I know of an Australian who ended up in a Thai hospital after drunken episode, and he was denied cover under his travel insurance policy. He was left with a AUD$30, 000 bill, which his family in Australia had to pay before he could leave hospital. Also, there is nothing worse than a drunk spoiling the atmosphere for everyone around them.

Hi Mark, I see you have many places you love to travel to and even ranked them iirc. My question is: Of all the places you have been to if you had to choose a place to work for the next few years what would it be and why? (some alternatives would be nice too)
I am currently graduating and looking for jobs everywhere, in my field I can probably get a job in any bigger city in an industrialized country.

You had a great video on visa requirements for China, but one thing I would love explained is the In-Transit 72 hour visa exemption. We would like to go to Disney Shanghai next year, then on to Disney Tokyo. I think we can fly from the USA-Shanghai, stay for 3 days, then fly to Tokyo and then home without needing a visa for china, but the rules seem complicated. Thanks for your videos!

maybe a bit irrelevant to this video, but is your favorite hidden gem city that you've traveled too? A city in the world which isn't talked about much, but should be on our bucket list for traveling? I understand the allure and glamour of cities like paris, london, NYC, etc, but I admire cities that fall under the radar and have their own great vibe and community.

My first passport, over 20 years ago, I got in 7-8 days. My last one, 3 years ago, within 14 days. I'm lucky because I was born in the Bay Area and I'm still here. The main office is in San Franciso, so my info doesn't have far to travel. Plus, I processed the last one at UC Berkeley. No line and I wonder if there's an internal priority due to students.
