My wife and I had three days in Paris, so, like you suggest, we went out to Versailles. Trouble was, we went on the day of the week that the palace was closed (and since I had been there a couple of times, I shouldve k
nown better. To make matters worse, we went during a time of year when the grounds werent in bloom.
Any way, a few months later we went to a wedding at which we were talking to a couple who were leaving to go to Parisfirst time. Good Samaritan that I am, I warned them not to visit Versailles on the day the palace was closed. Problem was, I told them the wrong day of the weekhah! Mr. stoopid strikes agAin!
So, could you kindly tell your readers which day Versailles palace is closed? I certainly cant.

Great cities that Mark recommends. Something to keep in mind when planning your trip, you will use at least a 1/2 day and often more to change cities. Packing, transfer to the train station, time on train, transfer to hotel and checking in can eat up a lot of time. If you are flying from the US your arrival day may not offer you much time to sightsee. If you travel from Saturday to Saturday (over 2 weeks) for instance you will have 12 full days on the ground, divide that by 4 cities and you have 2. 5 days or less in each. It can be done but you may want to limit to 3 cities and take a day-trip out of one of them to get away from the crush of city life.

I have to say an wonderful alternative to Versailles would be a day trip to Normandy with a knowledgeable guide. I loved Versailles, we spent our first night there before spending 9 more days in Paris. Our last day, we took a tour of Normandy. I think that is the most emotional trip I have ever been on. It is a wonderful tour and it very much brings World War II history alive. It makes it real to those of us that didn't have to live through it.

We took our kids to England a few months ago. We spent 5 days in London (our feet were tired but I could have used one more day to do the rest of the museums. Hampton Court was one of our favourite places to go. We did it on the same day as Windsor Castle, on our way to the Cotswolds (and Oxford) for a few days.

I prefer Amsterdam to Paris. I've been to Paris twice and every time the Parisian were arrogant, the city was dirty, lots of homeless on the way into the city and way to many tourists. although you can take a day trip from paris to Reims( champagne capital) which I can certainly recommend.

A highlight sampler like this is nice for some, but not eveyone. Unless your first trip to Europe is planned to be the one and only trip, a sampler of 4 regions in 2 weeks may be rather ambitious. Just pick one country. More laid back and less stressful.

My advice for Rome is to buy Romapass. You'll visit for free 2 musea and for the rest you'll have a discount. Moreover, at the Colosseum you'll go inside via de Express gate for groups. You'll also travel for free by subway.

Glad you have Prague in there. This is really a first time traveler. The exact amount of time to be spent in each of the cities. Like this everyone can say that they have been there and can start traveling for real.
