Please Note: Young People Wear Many of These Styles Throughout Europe. These tips are geared toward 35+ year old travelers Andrew: i dont get the urgency to not look like a tourist, especially as an american i gotta put my money on the american vs the average European in a street fight. maybe the easier solution is find out whats legal to carry for a knife in the european countries and have some deterence. not that youre getting into a knife fight but just to make it not worth their time
but really you should just be privy to scams and how to avoid them, you dont even need to know the specific scam an intelligent person with common sense can just tell when someone is trying to run some sort of scam on them or be dishonest. i dont think theres a large number of muggers out there specifically targeting foreigners in city centers if your walking by the hoodlum type somewhere less populated with bystanders just walk with proper posture and look ahead keeping an eye on the guy out of your peripheral vision, most muggers are going to want to have the drop on someone who looks unconfident and weak. theyre not targetting 30year old males who look like they can handle themselves

Good advice. I have lived and studied in several European nations and you really dont want to be immediately pegged as an American. Why? For both safety and savings! I remember having fun with my buddies. We went to a bordello, legal in Austria, just for some innocent fun. When I spoke English, the price was the highest. When I spoke standard German, the price came down. When I approached the window and greeted the person in the local dialect and continued, the price was the lowest. You can negotiate in stores. You can speak English of course if you dont know any other language, but it does not mean you are an American. You will open the door to opportunities if you try to do in Rome as the Romans do Great advice. Dress appropriately.

I don't care I'm proud to be from the US so if wearing a baseball cap is offensive to those people then they're not the kind of people I want to know anyway. I understand about not wearing hats and restaurants and certain places cuz that's custom here too in America but we don't put restrictions on travelers when they come over here and that's a difference between America and the rest of the world we accept people for who they are

does the German tourist visiting the U. S. go by BB hats and khakis? I don't think so. what's wrong with dressing the way you normally would. tourist destinations are used to people from different countries with different clothing styles. why is bad to been seen as being from the country you are from? and believe me, dressing like them wont make you blend in. tourist cities are all the same everywhere in the world.

Please Note: This Video is for 35+ year old US travelers heading to Europe. Young Europeans do wear most of these styles and trends, but the 35+ European crowd do not wear them to the same extent. And the locals won't care what you wear, so this is more to help you blend in a bit better. Great travels to you all & Thank you for all the comments & subscriptions.

#1 thing to avoid is wearing backpacks. Only tourists wear backpacks. Get a sling bag (European style) and use that for your day carry. As for hoodies: I wore my SAN FRANCISCO hoodie on a visit to Italy and often got the comment from Italians I love San Francisco! There are two types of Americans for Europeans: those from San Francisco and everyone else.

Why would you tell people from the US to not dress how we dress in our native land? Would you be ok with American's telling you what you shouldn't wear when visiting the US?
It sounds so juvenile and snobby. How about if you don't like how others dress, look elsewhere and keep your opinions to yourself.

Be honest, with the general overweight it has quite a bit of irony that Americans on holiday generally wear the describes sport outfit when out in public while their physique screams they should try to actually exercise in that outfit instead of wearing it as of it's a regular outfit.

Wife, daughter, and I were back in Lisbon in Aug. 2021, and in one afternoon counted eighteen sweatshirts on locals of all ages (yeah, we can identify them also) that had a New York theme. Brooklyn. Manhattan. NYNY. NYU. Columbia. Maybe they were on sale.

Well I remember American GI in Rome possibly right by the Vatican who hid his wallet inside his pants. A gang of gypsies came up on him women pretending they were into him. Nope they just wanted to pick pocket him. But they didn't get it
