Thanks for this amazing compilation of folk superstitions its fun to remember them. Just to add that NONE OF THEM are Lithuanian traditional superstitions, most of them are common in entire Eastern Europe or former USSA republics. However. i got one for you that truly originates from Baltic tribes (which are Latvians and Lutheranians): never light a cigarette from a candle as it will kill one seamen somewhere or by another vesrion it will kill spirit od lost seamen somewhere. No 1 really lights ciggs from a candles in Lithuania nor following superstitions much anymore but I think this one is very cool!

This was so accurate: D there are some more superstitions, such as Don't open your umbrella inside, hence bad luck; If you want happiness and tranquility in your home, hang a horseshoe above the entrance door; If you find a horseshoe on a road, pick it up, spit on it then make a wish and throw it through your left shoulder: D; If you drop food from your plate, it can mean that someone is in a hurry to visit you, or that someone is jealous of your food: D; If a bird poops on you, you will have luck, and many many many many many more superstitions we have: D

With wodka or other strong drink - you don't fill your own glass (bad hangover. With black cat - also you can spit over left shoulder 3 times and get your luck back. It's bad to curse in the house - calling fire in (to burn your home. If two people say same thing at same time - they will meet the liar (someone they know). If you tell (fear it will be or can be) something bad, to prevent this potential disaster you should knock on something from real wood/or tree 3 times. I hope my English are understandable

A few other superstitions:
If a black cat crosses a street or a path in front of you - that means bad luck.
You never should walk under the ladder - also not good.
You shouldn't sit at the corner of the table (while eating, celebrating, etc) - or you wont get married for 7 years.
If a knife falls to the floor, it means you will soon have a male guest. If a fork falls, a female guest will visit.
If someone (old acquaintance) doesn't recognize you, it means you'll be rich.

If you had a bad thought, knock on wood 3 times so that bad thing wouldn't happen, if you don't have wood near by, spit 3 times through your left shoulder. Also if you forgot something and went back home, and don't have a mirror to look at, go back through the door in reverse. Some elder people might get angry if you swing your legs while sitting on a chair, because you might be swinging a little devil on your leg.

In Poland we also drink on the second leg, we don't like black cats crossing our way and we love to see the chimney-sweepers. They bring luck but you have to hold onto your button until you see a bearded man and a lady in the glasses. Then you may let the button go and you'll be lucky: ) Try it out

Hand shake dangers in a dorway as explained by ethnologists are like - at the border of inside and outside of the house evil spirits dwell, so if you are left with only one hand left to defend yourself, bad things could happen: )
