Our last AirBnB stay in Tenerife was amazing! The appartment was better looking in reality than on the pictures, which were already amazing, and we became -real- friends with the girl who was in charge of the appartment (not the owner) and her two best friends, and we still, of course, communicate and we're so much looking forward to go there in November.
Long story short, after we left, I received an angry message from her, because we washed the dishes and put them in place, took care of the garbage, untied the beds, etc, and that the appartement was TOO clean (it was already, spotless when we arrived and, no, if we've always made the normal / usual day-to-day clean, we didn't do the full one, lol. I just told her that as we considered this appartement as ours during our stay, we also treated it like it was ours, meaning taking care of stuff, cleaning it, etc, and that was normal to act like human and not pigs, lol!

Many of your viewers may think this is over kill but I always leave a bottle of wine or a small box of candy with a thank you note for the owner. If you can afford to travel to Lisbon, 6-10 euros isn't going to break you. In the Abnb note the owner privately leaves you, they always express much appreciation. I typically stay in abnb for longer stays and probably wouldn't do it for stays under 7 days, except for the thank you note. It's also a good idea if you see live plants in the apt and you're staying more than five days is to ask the owner if they want you to water them (and how much water and which days You should do this.

Communcation - it's the way, the truth, and the life when you're relying on reputation. I rocked up at an AirBnB in smelly cycling gear with a so-so clean bicycle and it was fine, because well beforehand (while they still had an option to decline the booking) I'd said I'd be coming by bike from [other place], I'd probably get there in the late afternoon, and was there somewhere secure I could lock up?
Turns out the owner was also a keen cyclist, and it was fine to leave my bike in the hall, but even if they'd been a random person at lease they knew what to expect when the beardy lycra-hobo shows up.

Solid advice. I was a Superhost. And I've used the services. Never had less than 5 stars on either end. I generally, as a host, gave everybody great reviews. or just avoided reviewing if they were egregious. I think that picking up after yourself is key. I always had a professional cleaning service do the work. But I once had college boys on Spring Break. and it was just dank. BTW: I'm actually no longer in the Airbnb game. It was less of a hassle to just get straight up renters.

Excellent tips. Though in regards to cleaning/taking the sheets off: With AirBNB REALLY pushing AirBNB+, increasingly even this is going to be de-emphasized because they're really trying to recreate the hotel experience in a more local setting. AirBNB Plus is only available in select markets but they really seem to be transitioning into offering more amenities, not less, and a price increase coming along with that. And also with that, less expectations on the guess end.

Hi Wolters family! What kind of reviews do you leave for the places where you stay? Do you always leave positive reviews? One big issue I've heard from several of my customers this year is that their Airbnb was not clean/nice/comfortable/safe despite a ton of glowing 5-star reviews. It seems people don't leave negative reviews (even when justified) because they fear future hosts will see those on their profile and then won't rent to them. What do you think?

We just came back from our holiday in Germany and the Netherlands. Each home was more lovely than the description (except for one) and we treated each home as if it was our own. Most times we just put the towels in the hamper and took the linens off the bed even if the host said not to worry about it. We separated trash and recycles and disposed of accordingly. It was no big deal to do. Build bridges, dont burn them.

This is why i dont like Airbnb. Um i'm paying for a service. I'm not just crashing on a strangers sofa. I'm paying. There for no I will not strip the sheets. That is just nasty that people wouldnt change the sheets after each guest anyway. Nor am I getting dressed up or being extra nice when getting the key. I'm here for the key thanks and bye. Again i'm PAYING not trying to make a new best friend.

The only time I got dinged by a host was when I cancelled my last two days out of four. There was a 48 hour window to cancel, so I didn't get a monetary penalty, but he oddly still complained about me having to cancel the last two days even though I was well within his own guidelines to do so. Every other host through Airbnb loved me and my travel buddies lol

I'd like to add number 8, but at the number 1 spot. READ everything in the listing, I'm on ABB an nearly everyone that stays asks questions that are already covered in the listing info, it's really irritating, and makes me wondered if you even read the rules for the apt. All 7 of these are appreciated tho, Thanks for making this list.
