Good advice, Wolter, but I would add or amplify a couple of things. You should make sure all your regular immunisations are up to date, and should see a travel doctor about what specific extras you should get: yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis, etc. S/he might also recommend acetazolamide to help avoid altitude sickness while you get acclimatised.
There is one place where you can totally drink the water, and that's Cuenca. We're in our late 70s and drink bottled water everywhere else, but in a total of several months in Cuenca, we've never, ever, been sick.
As far as mosquitoes and biting flies are concerned, down in the Amazon rainforest, you need the effective repellents, deet and icaridin both, and should ALSO wear long sleeves. Things like citronella are much less effective. There are also a lot of dangerous snakes, so knee-high rubber boots are a must for hiking there. A lot of lodges have them to lend, but we carry our own just to be sure.
So take sensible precautions, but enjoy a beautiful and friendly country.

I have been going to Ecuador for years and have built a house which is half finished. I have found the people to be generally warm and courteous. However, some of the most dishonest and fraudulent people I have every met were Ecuadorians. The individual I hired as an engineer who assured me he was an engineer to build my house turned out not to be an engineer. He was addressed as 'Ingenerio' by every one. He now had started studying law because he told me he loved 'the law'. He robbed me at every opportunity. I have now discovered that this is quite normal in Ecuador and accounts for this country being the most corrupt in South America.

Im Ecuadorian and they robbed me in banos thank God I had a paper that said I paid half and they took my word for the other half. I was born in the US but they didnt care they returned it via police because of my husband who wasnt even born in the Us lol anyways be careful with those companies that have stores because with us they closed it down once they took our money and then they kept following us.

Three Main Points about Ecuador.
1)Be Careful walking in the wood or forest as there are Mountain Lions, Called Jaguars or Pumas. They are Lions that will kill you.
2)Do not go to Quito Bus Station ever EVER.
3)Chimborazo is not a place to go unless you understand that you will be 2 kilometres above the Summit of Everest.

My boyfriend is Ecuadorian so I been wanting to learn more about Ecuador. I know he wants to go back someday and if we have a future together then I might have to move there with him. I'm going to save your videos about Ecuador and South America in a playlist to look back on if the time comes or whenever I am able to visit.

You can drink the tap water in Cuenca. Local, expat or traveler, doesn't matter who's drinking the water. Not only is Cuenca tap water very safe, but it also tastes good.
Eating fresh fruit and vegetables shouldn't pose a problem either in many parts of the country.

I'm in Ecuador right now and loving it. The only safety issue so far was a corrupt traffic officer giving us a speeding ticket without speeding. (actually he didn't gave us a physical ticket just wanted $26 fine for speeding) other than that Ecuador is awesome!

I'm ecuadorian/canadian currently living in ecuador. This country is amazing. Yes always be careful, keep an eye on your belongings.
Tap water is fine in ambato, in the coast yes never drink the tap water. In a lot of places the tap water is fine.
