Christmas Markets throughout Europe are one of the best parts of visiting Europe in winter. Whether you are visiting the numerous Weihnachtsmarkten in Germany or the Christmas markets in France or Austria there are a few things you should know so you can get the most out of your holiday visit to the Christmas Markets. From the food, to the Pfand, to the shops, and the timing, Christmas markets are great, but here are a few things tourists should not do at the Christmas Markets in Europe

After the 25th it is still Christmas, the 25th is when the 12 days of Christmas starts. January 6th is Little Christmas when the 3 wise men show up, and when Christmas celebration/ season is over.
After the 6th of January is when decorations should be taken down.

Technically, taking the mugs home is illegal. Because the Pfand is, as he said, only a deposit and you're not buying them with that. Don't know the exact legal terms though. But then again. Nobody really cares and loads of people take them home.

Tip: soms Christmas markets are still open after Christmas! Check out which one's are open and which aren't. My friend and I will go interrailing around Christmas and about everywhere we're going after Christmas still has the Christmasmarkets.

Chicago, IL has an awesome Christkindl market open from Black Friday through Christmas Eve (closes early on Christmas Eve. The gluhewein is yummy and there's so many stands with cool trinkets and decorations!

Can anyone tell me the best place to stay for the Christmas markets in Vienna and how far from the airport it is please, Im trying to book just a 3 night break with my daughter, this is all new to me. Thanks

I Love these markets, just please don't say Christmas ends when it actually begins. The Markets are more of an advent thing in preparation for Christmas, which lasts until Epiphany.

As someone who worked at those markets, you should also not got too early in the day. A lot of stalls will sell you yesterdays dry leftovers for the same price.

Nothing to do with Christmas in Germany but in my earlier days, I used to work as Sears and we started putting up Christmas stuff in mid August.
