YES! Make sure you THOROUGHLY discuss expectations. A number of years ago I was going on a short cruise, and it just so happened that this was a vacation before I moved across the country. I asked a dear girlfriend to go along with me - sort of a so long, dear friend/girls' (extended) weekend. I was imagining two girlfriends talking, taking in the sights, enjoying great food, watching shows, going to late night piano bars where people start singing along, etc. This was her first cruise, with her only reference being the old Love Boat series. So her expectation was that we were going to hook up with some guys. She was ALWAYS on the hunt, then when it didn't look like she would score (every night, she would retire to the cabin early, sulk, and watch TV until she fell asleep.
The longest. 4 days. EVER!
Not only was it a terrible experience, but it really put a sad note on the end of our close, many-year friendship together.

This was great. Cool that you transitioned from Magnus to Jeff. As someone who's traveled with best friends dozens of times, I don't think there are any negatives. None. We're all best friends for reasons. We not only enjoy the relationship and have similar interests and philosophies but we respect each other. But yes, Hate #4 is real - we do inherit each other's problems. During an east coast sports trip, after a hard night I was unable to rebound the next morning. My best friend was shocked but without judgement or complaint went out and got some coffee, water, Gatorade and breakfast for me and said he'd check in in a few hours. When I was still in bed 11AM he replenished the fluids. even with a can of beer. Haha. I was finally recovered around 1PM and met him in the city. Memorable day indeed.

I'm very lucky, that my BFF and I travel well together. What helps is she is a master at using a SPREADSHEET for activities. Before we go off together (whether it's just the 2 of us or a group of us, she gets input from everyone of what they'd like to do. She puts it all on a list and we go from there. When it's a group, there are OPTIONS of several things to do on certain days, so you can go with a few different people that want to share the same activity, then everyone meet up later for drinks/dinner. It works out really, really well. Spa day, museums, shopping, eating, a show, etc. That way, everyone has at least one or more things they get to tick off their 'must see' list.
Also, be willing to be flexible. Flexible can be fun!

I used to go to festivals with a friend the first few times we stuck together like glue and both of us had a ok time. but the last few times we would travel together went out for meals together maybe go out once or twice. but we would mainly do are own thing in the day he would go surfing and I would go fishing in the evenings ha would go to hip hop stage I would go to the techno stage and once the festival was over we would meet in a club in town for a few hours. We both enjoyed our time away so much more when we gave each other space and we lookex forward to the times we had arranged to meet up.

Usually i'm a solo travel kinda guy but let me tell you about that 3 day with your buddy thing. it's so true!
Last trip I had with a friend after a few days travelling we had a bit of a bad situation where out of nowhere he was getting really annoyed and moody to the point where we started exchanging some words. turns out he was just hungry
After that i always made sure he was well fed even we came back from the trip (we were housemates in college)

I have personal experience of this, on two or three occasions. You can end up doing things you
didn't really want to, just to keep the peace. If you do go with friends, do your own thing during the
day and just meet up for the evening meal, where you can talk about where you've been. Maybe going
on a couple of excursions together. Going on holiday together is the quickest way to fall out with friends.

One of my friends wants to go on our girls' weekend, but she wants all four of us in one motel room and to splurge on McDonalds. We like to rent a house and try different local food. She gets drunk on one glass of wine while we will hit 6-8 wineries in a day. When things don't go her way, she gets whiny. We have decided she's not going with us.

Had a great time traveling with friends but Im a planner and none of them are. Normally the responsibility of planning the whole trip falls on my lap because nobody else picks up the slack, hotel, activities, booking tickets, places to see or eat, etc. We now try to visit places we have all already been to make it more relaxed.

So I took a trip to Europe with my family and brought my Sister along. Short story short. we met up with my friend Magnus from Sweden and 14 months later my Sister and Magnus were married with a kid on the way. Not saying traveling with friends is a bad thing, but now I have to buy one more Christmas present very year.
