Hidden Costs of Travel w/ The Gallivanting Gals - Wolters World
video description
Two things I considered.
1. Hand washing in the hotel sink for smalls.
2. A service wash at a local laundrette or sitting it out on a rest day and doing the laundry myself at the laundrette.

I cancelled a hotel booking in Switzerland recently because upon further investigation, the lovely pancakes and waffles that were plastered all over the breakfast-room photos were not included in the breakfast rate. We found a better hotel that worked out the same price & with everything included. So always do a search of breakfast in that hotels trip advisor page, if the breakfast is a major motivator to book a property. Same goes for pools, spa, gyms or anything else thats promoting you to book that specific property. The service or facility may not be even operational or look how it does in the photos. Trip advisor search tool is a great tool for this

Given the remote location of my home.
When I travel overseas, it's a bloody long trip. So, I insist on traveling Business class. In doing this, the airlines that service my home town include a 25 mile limo service and access to business lounges in airports.
Yes the tickets are more expensive, but:
Parking fees at the airport can be ignored.
Uber/taxi fees to the airport can be ignored.
Flying for 12 hours in 'cattle class' seating can be ignored.
Then, when you have a 3 hour layover, you can access a shower to freshen up before continuing.
So you arrive, tired but not exhausted and you'll be just that bit more alert!

Regarding the parking fees at airports, one handy thing I recently discovered while traveling this summer is that the Charlotte airport allows you to pre-pay for long-term parking before you arrive AND at a 30-50% discount over paying on-site. We were able to park for a week-long trip in the hourly lot within walking distance to the terminal for the same rice I would have normally paid to park in the remote lot and take the shuttle bus. Not sure how widespread this has become, but it's worth checking your airport's website before you park and fly.

Love the new hotel wifi hidden cost: basic included but cost to upgrade to a 'premium' package. And in Europe, don't think that bread on your table is free (or the wine or the bottle water) or in Italy, il coperto. . Oh and speaking of rental cars overseas, in some areas in winter just expect to pay to upgrade your tires to winter tires. Plus vignettes for certain countries to drive on their roads (Austria for sure. Thanks for the good info.

free walking tours - Im glad the Gallivanting Gals brought this up. I too have seen people sneak away as soon as the tip request is made.
Some walking tours even have perks. In Warsaw the free walking tour made a stop at a very cool bar/restaurant where we were served free vodka and smalec (pork lard) served with bread and pickles. Great marketing for the restaurant for sure but it was a nice addition to the tour.

I bring snickers or some other bars with me so that I can eat and skip the high priced food. A few times I go to my favorite Italian deli before heading to the airport. Once I arrive at the airport, I eat the huge sub sandwich before going through security. This way I am full before my flight and I do not have eat until I am on the plane or at my destination.

Really useful video. That said, this stuff drives me nuts. Lots of my colleagues in tours will frequently point to this exact laundry list of fees to justify charging fees to customers themselves. They say this is evidence that customers don't mind fees. Really? I don't agree and refuse to charge my customers any kind of fees. What you see is what you pay.

Excellent- informative about cost that are common, but generally but generally not expected. The way to determine some expenses i. e. hotel ask at check on if I don't use frig what will you charge my credit car - no expections. After you know the bottom line than- if you feel the need- can go into the weeds of the itemizations.
