Nice to see the park again. I worked and lived at Castolon as a seasonal Ranger in the winter of 1983-84 and the visitor area-buildings looked different then. I understand the store and other buildings burned down since I worked there. We used horses to ride the trails outside the developed area to check on water holes for back county permits we issued and even rounded up cattle and horses sent over from Mexico to graze in the park. The owners had to pay a fine and take their animals back to Mexico. At that time there was no TV or radio reception, or phone lines down there and we kept in touch with HQ (40 miles away) with the park radios. You could take a row boat across the Rio Grande river to the village (Mexico) and a lady there made you an all you can eat Mexican dinner in her house for $5. 00. Cost you $1. 00 to take the same boat back across the river to the U. S. Loved the peace and quiet of that beautiful desert. Saw more people in your video than I did back then in 2 weeks. What those people swimming in the river don't know is most of that water is coming out of Mexico. The Rio Grande pretty much stops at el paso.

Glad you made it, and you did some good stuff for one day. If you make it back, check out Upper Burro Mesa Trail. Heckuva fun hike. Also worth going to the other end of the park to the Rio Grande Village Campground to take in the Rio Grande Overlook view back towards the Chisos. And while you're down there, you can check out Boquillas Canyon.

South Rim is the most beautiful part of the park! When I hike this trail I always do South Rim to Emory Peak. It's about a 16 mile loop. I stop at the South Rim viewing point and read for 30 min or so and then back at it: ) I usually get started around 3: 30am to be up to South Rim by sunrise AllTrails app is my best friend

Heading out there from Dallas in two days. Stying at Ocotillos Village in Terlingua. Does anyone have time recommendations for entering the park? I saw where one person begins at 3: 30 am? I've heard it's about a 40-minute drive to the park from Terlingua, is this correct?

Were those canoes there for people to use? When we went in July of 2021 there was no canoes. We wanted to cross to hike up the mountain. But we couldn't since there was water and no canoes. So you have to swim in order to hike up that mountain.

Great video. Big Bend is a hidden Jewl for sure. The park is so remote that the night sky is one of the best of all National Parks. The desert beauty is absolutely amazing. It is a great place to go and generally not run into large crowds.

Great video. I was there a couple years ago with my sister and brother-in-law and we did pretty much the same exact things you and your dad did. We did the Lost Mine Trail, Balanced Rock and the Santa Elena Canyon trail also.

I love Big Bend! I go every year. Btw Santa Elena is pronounced Eh-lane-ah and Sotol is pronounced so-toll. Great video. These all of the top spots I suggest for people who only have 1-2 days in the park
