And I should add that most apartment buildings in brazil (which are perceived as a -luxury- or whatever crap reasoning they have behind it) charge outrageously expensive rates for -maintenance-. So basically that guy there is being paid to NOT do his job of simply cleaning the driveway once every 14 days, that would be enough. For you to have an idea, said -maintenance- fees can cost up to 50% of rent, there's no regulation about these fees and there's no way to really verify what's made with all the money.
About the moss thing, before anyone comes here upset at me, I was raised on the countryside and lived on farms in more than one occasion. Not even there we would have such concentrated ammount of mold growing. Disgusting and unnaceptable.

Belem is one the most intersting cities in brazil if you are Looking for a different experience especially in different kinds of food and Life style because its a more exotic and unique culture. But in therms of infrastructure and security, its one of the worse cities. The cities from the South of brazil are more developed and more secure but maybe the food experience and the culture can be more -normal- it s like a more stronger german/slav european culture. But they also have and unique culture.

So glad to see this awesome guy in my hometown. I'm very proud to be born in this amazing city. My people is extremely friendly and I appreciate the fact Mark is willing to share this experience with the world. I wish I could meet him in person. He should definitely come to Canada, my second home now. Even though there's not as many options of local food as in Belem, but you're totally gonna feel the kindness and warmth of the Canadians.

Whaaaaaaaaaat you spent 67Usd per night for all 5 people? in that area in a super basic appartment
They totally screwed up with your money average for that flat is 18usd per day in that area!
I have pretty much traveled all Brazil with that price I was in a luxury private condo in front of the beach in Rio you just pay for the flat usually not for how many people are living in.

Of course it's dangerous, you visited the worst states in Brazil like Rio for example, even us Brazilians never want to go to those places, my state is pretty safe (I live in the capital of the state) and I often go out and let my doors and windows opened and never happened anything bad and I also go out late at night and I've never been robbed before.

Even though open kitchens are so popular in lots of countries, it does not seem so useful, the smell of food spreads
all over the rooms and couches, curtains and all fabrics absorb it. This is why n Europe, especially in Italy, kitchens have a door and a window, unless they are in veeeery small houses.

Nice apartment, the windows with no screens and the old elevator would freak me out a bit though especially with a small child. that-s likely what the netting is for, safety not birds. but it-s not on all the windows so if you have small children or pets. yeah kinda would freak me out
