Edinburgh has been the capital of Scotland since 1437. The city is a UNESCO Heritage Site and is renowned for its history, architecture, and many iconic landmarks such as Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile, Holyrood Park, Calton Hill, and Arthur's Seat. As UNESCO explains, Edinburgh has two distinct areas: the Old Town, dominated by a medieval fortress; and the neoclassical New Town, whose development from the 18th century onwards had a far-reaching influence on European urban planning.
