I Flew America's LONGEST Turboprop Flight!

I flew America's Longest Turboprop flight at almost 3 hours long - and was surprised at just how few people were onboard. Wish I knew you were flying through our home base here at TPA Noel. Would have been great to meet you even for only a minute or two! Hope Rach is doing well now and thanks as always for this video. Have almost taken Silver who is owned by Jetblue from TPA down to Key West a few times. Just have not done it yet and during our summer thunderstorm season would rather not, but will at some point soon just to take a ride on the ATR. Stay well Noel you and Rach and great as always!

It s interesting how turboprops aren t used much in the US, they certainly are in Canada longest turboprop flight I ve been on is YHZ-YOW-YTZ with Porter on the Q400. 4 hours total including 40 minutes on the ground at Ottawa (but you have to stay onboard. Last leg home had about 15 people on board. Porter service is great though - you get free beer/wine and snacks on every leg
It s actually a continuation of a flight - the flight starts in St. John s (YYT) before heading to YHZ and that s a 2 hour hop as well. can t imagine being on a Dash 8 for over 6 hours - though I don t think many people choose to when they can likely fly direct on a jet

Hey, what do you know, special bonus appearance at the end!
Sounds like an ambitious routing, Tampa to Greensboro, not what you normally expect. Would most people on a Greensboro route be likely connecting via some closer major hub like CLT or ATL?
I recall getting on so many t-props when making smaller-town connections in the 90s and early 00s, before the RJs took over. As we got from the video, one thing to bear in mind is when on a prop plane, if you have the choice sit away from the plane of the propeller disk. On something like an ATR try immediately behind the wing.

Back in the olden days, like 25-30 years ago, it wasn't uncommon to do multi-hour trips in turboprops here in the States. There was one route in particular, about 2 hours long IIRC, that we flew multiple times on an EMB-120. I remember the first time I flew that leg, I was amazed at how much vibration there was--my snack vibrated right off my tray!
P. S. As soon as you said Greensboro I hoped you'd meet up with Jeb!

Is modern microphone technology really so poor that the only way for the subject to be heard is to constantly hold the microphone to their lips, sorry I find this presentation style very frustrating; along with really over the top repetition of facts in the commentary. Much of the factual content of Noel's reporting is very interesting, but I'm not a fan of his style. sorry!

GSO used to be a big US Airways location. It even had (may still have) and executive lounge. It helps that TimCo (why you saw those odd planes across the runway) and Honda have huge facilities connected to the airport.
I worked out of GSO for a little over a year, and would constantly fly out of there when the AA/US Air merger was going on. It was crazy busy at the time.

I don't avoid turbo-props because of the planes but rather the pilots. See any 15 year ATR pilots these days? USAir 1549 (Scully) was a jet plane that had no business surviving but did because of the pilot. A month later Colgan Air 3407 to Bufffalo didn't have any business crashing with no survivors but did because of the pilot. It is a numbers game for me, even if small.

I love you content. I'm curious about something I learned recently. I have heard that one reason Americans are not into Turboprop planes is that they still use leaded (TEL) fuel. Do you know if leaded fuel is used on routes like these? I know that it is still allowed for some piston driven turboprop planes. Just curious as a science minded guy.

Got to hand it to you Noel, you certainly put the miles in mate. Another great video, thanks so much for filming these. You said long ago in a New York hotel that you liked to make them for people that can't get out and about too much anymore, well, that includes me unfortunately and I get to travel with you so thanks so much.

I always enjoy ATR flights, much more than the Dash 8! That is a plane I like to avoid, it's really noisy during midflight. The ATR is more quiet during the flight and is also more stabile.
Still I the prop planes gives me the feeling of really flying. The accelerating of the engines during take off gives a great sound!

I have taken turbo props a few times in Canada, last time I did it was the same feeling you have on a rollercoaster. The plane kept shaking and suddenly droping down. It felt like it was gonna fall out the sky at any minute. but I weirdly enjoyed it as an experience it was exhilarating and not boring I'll give it that.

Love your video's Noel! I have a humble suggestion for a future flight next time you go to Europe. Flying Air Saint-Pierre to Paris via Saint-Pierre! One of the shortest and most unique flights across the Atlantic! Unfortunately it only operates during the summer, so you may have to wait until next year.

Thanks Noel for another great video.
I don t think this route is going to last very long unless the air fares are cut to the lowest possible, to make up for the lack of food and beverage service, only a free bottle of water on a three hour long flight and no drinks or food on sale on board!

Loved the video, a really cool flight!
I personally live turboprops, the noise is music to my ears and soothing! Though never been on a three hour turboprop flight to be fair! Think one and a half hour is the longest one.
Hope this works out for Silver!
Nice surprise to see Jeb too!

The Baldi Aldi shirt made my day! The last time I flew on a plane like that I had a seat like yours that was directly level with the propeller and I kept thinking if that thing breaks off its gonna chop me up in a split second so I would have taken a different row myself LOL.

I've flown in a turboprop precisely once. Boutique Air BOS-MSS-BWI. The seats were comfy but it was very loud. The landing nearly made me wonder if I do, in fact, get motion sickness. My coffee spilled all over me on takeoff from BOS but that's maybe a bit on me I guess.

Ww were checking out Silver Airways to fly MCO to Key West. I flew a few times a turbo prop from Charlottesville to Detroit, about 3 hrs with NorthWest airlines. All my loose fillings were definetly discovered on those flights, lol. the T- Shirt
reply

Fun fact, there is a negligibly increased risk sitting in that seat. In the extremely unlikely event of a prop breaking off, AND if that prop blade comes off in the direction of the cabin, you dead! I think I'd rather sit anywhere else.
reply

I had a feeling that Jeb may pop up on this video somewhere. I was half expecting to be in the seat behind you on the plane, making bunny ears behind your head lol. You AV geeks have a really cool community. Thanks for sharing this Noel.

So you thought that flight was noisy Noel. my first flight was with a swissair DC6B in 1956 and the noise and vibration was something else. Soon I was on the luxury of Vickers Viscount turboprops and they were quiet in comparison
