Flying To East Timor With Aero Dili: Are They Really That Bad If you think that hotel is rustic, I remember staying in small town independent motels in Mexico in the 1990, that featured bare electrical wires by the lamp switch so that you got zapped the first time you tried it and learned your lesson. I mean, you've got heat and AC! One place in Puerto Escondido had metal ceiling fans that looked like repurposed airplane propellers and sounded almost as loud. They were positioned right over they bed and shook like they were about to fall off and decapitate you. Since there was no AC, turning it off made the room unbearable and you just had to hope that one nut would hold. Then there was the strong odor of sewage emanating from the shower drain and the cute little lizards who claimed the room as their own. When you checked in and they saw you were a tourist, they would explain that the lizards were harmless.
How can you go wrong for $12/night
Then there was the hotel in San Francisco in 1982 that cost $10. What a deal until you realized the room was 6' X 6' and contained 2 bunk beds for you and your 3 roommates.

I can see why they thought you had scissors in your bag. I used to work as security at a major airport in the UK. They use something called TAP which is a computer that in simple terms overlays a forbidden item on the real x-ray of your bag. It's there to keep the people that are looking at the screens alert and trained on the job.
Some times these DO get through and when a bag is pulled for searching they'll see the exact same image as they're pulling your bag for search, with the superimposed / fake image still visible and they are really convincing!
Oh, the things I've actually found in people's bags I could write a book about, but won't discuss here because. Well, some are a little bit niche lets say, but not illegal!

That was a very interesting plane & place. You are very brave to risk eating some of that food! It surprised me to see the Aussie working at the hotel. It looked pretty clean & ok. That beach could have been very nice but I guess the country is still trying to recover from the war. I am surprised some investor hasn't come to try & put resorts or something & try to improve the area. It could attract visitors like Bali. Only 10 visitors a day How do the little hotels stay in business. It was darling to see the school girls all say hello & high five you! They must have been attracted by your red beard! But they are very trusting!

Although there hasn't been a war for 25 years there's been a lot of unrest and factional fighting. Even the UN has had to intervene. So it's not been the most exciting place for a tourist to visit in terms of safety. Great video as always. I love watching these videos of airlines that most people aren't familiar with, taking you to places that most foreigners/tourist's don't visit. Even though the food might not have been the most exciting, it's still looks better than most budget airlines. What do you get on Ryanair A bacon roll or something if you're lucky.

What it is the bathroom in your hotel and well the room overall isn’t bad. It’s not fancy. But it does look clean and comfortable. Which really is what you need. If you’ve been traveling and are worn out. Doesn’t have to be fancy. Just clean and comfortable and relaxing. great video my friend. Thank you for posting and sharing.
Ask for that television though lol, I think my iPad pro 12. 9 inch is bigger than that lol

At least you didn’t get tom n dick. One thing I’ll counter about Dili being rough around the edges’. They, unlike Bali get basically no dollar, but Bali is as a rough around the edges as a place can be. No excuses actually after years of tourist billions, shameful in fact how broken that place is. Good luck to Timor Leste, hope the airline expanding brings them the much needed exposure.

I don't get the Sam Chui hate. Is it content carefully produced together with the airlines Yes. Is it very marketing heavy Yes. But there's also no secret about that. On the other hand he can provide behind the scenes views a flight reviewer who just travels as normal passenger just cannot get. Just very different kind of content, both is informational and can be enjoyed.

In Oz if you get the chance, fly the Dash 8 Qantaslink flight from Cairns to Hamilton Island. Lower altitude means you get to see the Great Barrier Reef (sit on the left) for much of the flight. The short runway at HTI means the flight would turn into a cruise if the brakes fail. Hire a golf buggy & drive past George Harrison's house.

Another great video from the far reaches of the globe. Those little kids were so amazing, even they know that your only 1 of 9 others who look like they are from out of town. They reminded me of kids from the 1960's when kids were allowed to play outside with other kids and have fun. The motel was nice and had that nice island vibe to it.

Before you said your next stop I thought Australia and I thinking you showed the tail of the airline you will fly to Darwin on. I flew the same domestically there in July and it wasn't as bad as people say it is.
As far as people who were on their phones you should have asked the crew What's the Areo Dili O with people on their phones

reply

A dilli, a dally lol. Yes, interesting place. You often find people on the Asia regional islands are lovely. Even in Borneo where they always say hello all the time. Looking forward to next journey to Darwin. I’ve been everywhere here but not Darwin. Glad to survive the flight. They are just fairly new so just unfortunate for Josh.

Unfortunately, they don't have the infrastructure to become a hub for the region. They need some serious investment to develop the country. But such places, IMO, are the best places to visit exactly because they aren't full of tourists, and the foreign brands you find like a rash everywhere else, and retain their own identity.

The last time I saw Dili was during the troubles, as in IT contractor for one of the many non gov orgs working in the region, arrived on the HMAS Jervis Bay, flew out on a Canadian operated Hercules, but even then the locals were very friendly. Great to see them moving ahead, (was the bridge completed yet)

You got more food on AeroDili than you’d have gotten on a flight the same length in Europe and the US, and the hotel seemed pretty reasonable for the location (toiletries, WiFi, aircon) I normally find your videos very informative but I think you went too harsh on East Timor.
reply

Hi Nowel. Noel. Recently my bank acc was hacked by people from USA and I am from Australia. I got I resolved through my bank but now I am thinking about signing up for your sponsor. Could that be the correct option for me What happens if they find my details somewhere

Beaches in Indonesia always look like this during and just after rainy season- most rubbish is natural, plus some plastic. People usually clean it up in one go (except at expensive hotel beach fronts) after rainy season is over, as new rubbish is flooding in every day.
reply

Noel probably has not been on Asian beaches enough lately to know that the plastic pollution problem in the Oceans have now gotten to the point where it's impossible to keep a beach clean even where they have people picking litter all day every day.
reply

This is why I don't & will not ever fly with them - they let kids shout and cry with no intervention. Never ever fly with them - their staff have no idea (as do the majority of their ignorant passenger parents) of normal flight behaviour.
reply

Be kind, spread a bit of cheer, and the world returns the favor. Noel understands this,
but Josh remains a bit caustic, and gets it back in return. Nice to see how friendly people are, in East Timor. Only ten foreign visitors a day Wow.
