Although I agree with you on one level we often forget that the ottoman empire did not come from nowhere it grew from within the Byzantine empire, So the Ottoman empire is more the child of the Greeks than a stranger. A child which usurped the mother. a lot of the current heritage arguments stem from the modern Turkish/Greek conflict, in truth they are both equally entitled to claim. Same people, different ideals. I'm not Turkish or Greek and I'm not arguing, just sharing my insights.

Janissaries are the elite soldiers and also the police/fire fighter in Istanbul. The elites amond Janissarries which are Solaklar they are the pesonal guards of the emperor, Solak means Left handed they are called lefthanded because they can wield bow, use sword/spear and many weapons with both hands to protect the emperor from assults coming from all directions during battle and peace time. Thats why no Ottoman emperor died during battle.

To this day the Croatians are some of the strongest athletes. The jannissaries were often young boys taken from Croatia and other nearby countries. They were raised by the Ottomans to become one off the most powerful armies of the era.

The type of architecture shows that they used the architectural knowledge of the Byzantines, much as you can see in Cordova, Spain.
