That is such a sweet set-up.
I'd love to be able to afford something similar.
The best I can do is reminisce about the time 30 years ago when I drove through Namibia solo in a hired landrover with a roof tent.
Camping alone in the vastness of the Namib desert was a phenomenal experience.
I went several days without seeing another human being.
It's crazy to think I was navigating via a handheld compass and a paper map, I had absolutely no means of communication with the outside world, and nobody knew where I was.
That's true adventure.
Some might think it reckless, but I loved it, and lived to tell the tale.

Hi there Mike - well I am so impressed with your awning, I've never seen anything like that before! It's gonna be very useful in many aspects of either solo, group or family camps and give good shelter when cooking, wood carving, bushcrafting etc. I've noticed more and more on the roads, am seeing more rooftop tents. So obviously with yourself, Andy and Simon (Bloke in the Woods) each having awnings and rooftents, it's showcasing their potential. Keep up the amazing work you do, you should be an Outdoors Zsar for the UK. Take care, all the best, Neil.

When you mentioned the first error, I noticed the first error too. Awning, chair then beer! Not sure if it was my advice you took when starting the build but I said get a 270 awning, I've had just normal side awnings but nothing is as good as the 270, I know you want the rooftop tent for your family but when by yourself just use a stretcher under the awning.

I never bother to take a level, just park with the best level around. As long as my head is not down hill, the rest doesn't matter at all. Have fun with the family tripping and camping. Have you planned who will sleep where, as you only have a small double bed up top. I guess that it will depend on child ages and their level of independence.

Bushcraft a ladder. You brought an axe, saw and some cordage.
Oatmeal is instant. Add your own desired flavors. No extra packaging. Get a silicone reusable zip-lock bag if you need an envelope to eat from. You can pour boiling water in them.

If your going off road into wooded areas you might want to think about a small electric chainsaw in the event you run across a down tree in the road. Also a bumper winch would be handy pulling yourself out of mud if you happen to get stuck

I noticed double d-rings on the awning straps; if you know how to strap on a motorcycle helmet or are willing to look it up, they'll cinch it down snug. Relying on just the velcro will eventually lead to worn out velcro.

Alright, now you're just showing off. If I had just found you now, I'd hate you. But, you've grafted for everything you have. So has your dad and your missus. So, good on ya!
Keep living the dream.

Nice set up. I would change out all the plastics for stainless steel especially around the food so there's no micro plastics to worry about. That awning would go very nice on a regular pick up aswell

Hi there, would you mind sharing what kind of product the large cover is, connected to the vehicle
I want to make a van for travelling and being independent, with a similar system.
Thank you!

what a great setup, I did say how's he going to get in the roof tent when you put the oaring up. Then you proceeded to explain straight away, it was as if I were there, I wish I was, great video.

I like making my own camping box, kitchen pod, chuck box etc
Made my latest one from 1 narrow IKEA kitchen wall cabinet.
Found some stainless steel to glue on top as a safe surface to cook on

Highly recommend a chef style knife for food prep. Food is criminally unseasoned. Those ingredients require a ton of salt to be delicious. Lime flavor profile for fajitas, not lemon.

My Dad built a kitchen in a box and had a table with legs that screwed into a threaded metal bracket. It all fit on our car roof rack with our canvas tent. Did a lot of camping in 1965-1980!

That's not camping, that's glamping! I love it. What an excellent job you've done with the Defender, so much so that you've convinced me to sub to Life of Mike. Good job all round.

I like plain porridge pots from any supermarket, and I add a touch of cinnamon, pour in the water, chop a banana in, stir and let it steep for a few minutes. A lot cheaper.

I have that Forest Fundamentals fire starter, it is a brilliant bit of kit. They're a great company, I can't wait to play with the new stove they've just released.

Level Never had that problem, but I would love to hear why it's important. I have never slept in a tent/car/van/snow cave and checked the level. Is it important
