Baler twine: the outdoorsman's duct tapeMike, on a more serious note, do you have deer ticks in your area? They are surprisingly dangerous little buers and their range is expanding northwards. I also follow Shawn James in Canada (My Self Reliance on YT. He recently did a video on ticks and other bugs that cause him issues, so I have sent him a couple of tick removal tools. I would be happy to do the same for you, if it's an issue there. They are endemic here. :-( You should at least be aware of the things and do some online research, for your own protection. Bites from infected ticks can cause life-changing illnesses (encephalitis - [jabs against TBE tick-borne encephalitis may be available in the UK, not sure] and borelliosis [no protection available]. Sorry for the long comment.

What's up, Mike? I was wondering if you could share some knowledge with me. So I've recently got a wooden cup thing from my gf and I was willing to take my coffee in it everyday. The problem is: the wood kind of sucks the liquid, not all of it, but enough to make it expand and even leak some (not to mention the taste it prints into the beverage. Since you always use your bowls/cups (is cookster how you call them) to have tea, coffee and even milk, I assume they don't have the same problem as mine. I know you didn't make those, but do you know what it is they have that make it possible to drink from them w/o leaking or giving a the drink a wood taste? Is that some kind of coating with a specific material or something? Anyway, thanks in advance man

I was wondering. With a project like this which is now more of a cool place to hang out then a emergency survival shelter and there isn't really any law of authenticity that you are breaking, is it ok to bring in nails, yes, I said it, store bought, in a box, actual nails? You already have a knife, saw, axe, paracord, tarp etc. Why not proper nails, not the stuff your dad uses on the pallet wood project: ) a hammer and a sledge hammer and draw the line there? Any thoughts, Mike?

Go to a swimming pool supplier, or possibly just a large hardware/garden store, and get some diatomaceous earth, which is cheap and non-toxic. Spread the dust around where you don't want bugs or ants. It is little glass crystals that will get in their joints and saw the chitin shells so they go all wobbly and die. It won't hurt birds or earthworms, just insects and everything that has a chitin shell. Cheap and effective, and will last for a few years.

If you are worried about the ants building a nest right there, there's a good natural way to get rid of them if you need to. Mix sugar and cinnamon together (roughly 2 tsp sugar to 1 cinnamon) and sprinkle it around the area. Ants can't digest cinnamon, and they eventually die off as their bodies don't know what to do with it. Of course, only use it if they become a proper nuisance, I'm not advocating ant genocide for the fun of it.

Mix up a spray bottle of a few drops of eucalyptus and tea tree oil and after clearing your immediate area work your way out. 70% water. Natural solution is to figure out how to plant eucalyptus in the area my friend. I have watched hoards of small ant die in place with a couple of spritzes. sorry cant spell. A baggy of properly crushed moth balls is also a good temporary deterrent spread properly.

If you take some of the ash from your fire pit and spread it around the edges of your camp site. it will help control the ants from making nests under the camp. its not a long term solution, as it would need to be done like on a monthly basis. But, if you are able to start collection the wood ash from any fires you have. it would be a way to help control them without killing them.
