WICHITA: I Visited Kansas' Biggest City - This Is What I Saw As a local Wichita resident from Hutchinson, basically everyone who listened to your first minute of monologue gave a collective cringe and shudder when we heard you mispronounce the Arkansas River as the Arkansaw River. Its Ar-Kansas not Arkan-saw.
Also, you seriously did our fairly great city a disservice in so many ways. You gloss over - or entirely skip - so many great things about Wichita and Sedgwick County, just read through the many comments or contact the Sedgwick County and Wichita tourism departments and the Chamber of Commerce for a plethora of points of interest.
But if youre not going to give our city a fair and reasonable shake and experience-rich exploration, I suggest you should take this video down.
Im absolutely disliking this video until our city and area gets a PROPER representation.
I have zero affiliation with any part of city or other local government, tourism, or commercial entity. All opinions expressed herein are my own and in no way are meant to represent any official or entity of Wichita.

I've lived in Wichita for 3 years and haven't been to about half of the areas you went to.
My slogan for Wichita is Big City Options, Small Town Vibes.
There's thousands of acres of park lands for families and biking trails. The YMCA network and library network is unmatched. They make things like rock climbing, water parks, lessons in any discipline accessible to anyone because the prices are affordable. The museums here are awesome! And there are really good unique restaurants. The best part are the people. They are super friendly, welcoming and inclusive.

Native Wichitan, now living out of state. Loved seeing my hometown profiled in your journeys. Chisholm Trail is actually Douglas Ave. The original cattle trail ran through downtown. Also, after they were bought by Pepsi, Pizza Hut used to have a nice corporate HQ on east Douglas, near Webb Rd, before moving to Dallas in about 2001. Finally, if you pronounce the river like the state around Wichita locals, expect funny looks. That's how we could tell out-of-towners. In Wichita, the river is pronounced Ar-KAN-zus.

The guy you shown at the end by the name of BTK was arrested in Park City, just outside of Wichita. The police had his house surrounded while I was just down the street with my family at the Quick Trip watching it happen. I did not know what was going on at the time, but later on that night had discovered that the man I saw get arrested was the BTK. I will never forget that moment.

TWO HUGE MISSES: 1) In Kansas, the rivers are not called Arkan-saw but AR-kansas rivers. The name goes to AR-kansaw when it moves over the border and out of Kansas. 2) Did you know about Wichita's significant aircraft history So sad you failed to report on that. (Note: Main Street is actually called Douglas) Oh. and loved the drunk black guy at the WSU dive bar!

Carly Fitzpatrick below. You're exactly right. I was born in Wesley hospital. Wichita has its plusses and minuses. But I was born there I miss my mother. And I miss Wichita and its plusses. Like the round teachers lounge at Coleman Jr high. And that girl that pounded on my back innmiss parishes class's. Col3man. History b 3 2nd floor.

Next time you are in Wichita visit more by the river like the Delano neighborhood and College Hill. Chisolm Trail is the trail where Billy the Kid and Jesse Chisolm went through. I love the video of Kirbys! I moved out of Kansas about 10 years ago. Downtown is alot different than in the 1990's and early 2000's.
reply

O crap been pretty blasted at Kirby's, open mic nites are great got these collage kids who are like music majors go in there and just jam out. It's real easy to piss people off in there, more stuck up arts types, then you got the field house it's more of your sports bar, they did have 89 cent beer nites.

My husband and I were planning a trip to Wichita but after seeing this videoummm no thanks. Looks like the city is in ruin with all of its run down and closed businesses. If there is only the statue on the river to look forward to, we’ll we just saw it. Thanks for saving us money.

One of the worlds great mysteries, Why does American towns/cities have side walks. As nobody uses them.
Has rampant crime made people scared to walk.
I mention this often, because I am 83 y. o. and prior to moving to Thailand 7 years ago walked 5 miles every day.

We stayed at the hotel when a big tornado came thru and all the airline pilots were down there too and there were fancy murals on the walls from the days when there was a speak easy. Next time you stay there try and get someone to take you to the basement.

I lived here for 2 years just before my dad retired from the Air Force. Some of the fondest times of my life were made here. I loved it. Just wish Joyland was still there. McConnell AFB was great! Played my first golf and got my first kiss in Wichita!

Born and raised. I think you did a Decent job. people expect too much. your traveling from state to state Making cools videos, they dont have to show everything about the city just what you choose to visit. I envy you, I'd love to do the same
reply

Just FYI, if you're in Wichia and you call it the Arkansas river, pronounced like the state, they will virtually crucify you. I have been corrected multiple times it's the Ar-Kansas river. The Kansas part pronounced like the state of Kansas.
reply

I doubt you see this so late. I just stumbled on your videos. Wichita is my old hometown. I grew up there. Good video but let's get you pronouncing that river right. It's the Ar-KAN-sas River Also, El Dorado has a long A sound
reply

I've been gone since 2015 I think it was, still a lot of blight in the city been that way for a while, I've done demo in alot of the buildings you shown making them into expensive 1. 3k a month appts for trust fund kids.
reply

Not from Kansas, but just stumbled upon this. I have to ask, where are the humans or who rented the city out for you to film!
I'm genuinelly perplexed. I've never seen a downtown with less than 10 people.

reply

That Orpheum intersection(1st and Broadway) is where Country singer, Craig Morgan, shot part of the video for his hit song, International Harvester. I know cuz I was there watching, It was quite interesting.
reply

It's true, any place that has a pbr special is a dive bar -- homes of the 3. 2 beer the whole nation over. The place you visited looks a little forced, though -- not much dive, lotsa decoration.
reply

BTK. .. EUUUU >> what a sicko dick Head. Hey I love your Show, I'm in Bulgaria and it's Boring here, no one ever gets killed or Murdered, But when they do, they usually get caught the same day!
reply

It's Ar-Kansas. Not Arkansaw. Just sayin'. Only people not from Kansas say it like that. Kansas doesn't have much but it has Keeper of the Plains. But it gets hotter than Satan's ball sack.
reply

thanks for sharing this video! I own rental properties in wichita and i will finally be visiting the city this week for the first time, after 3 years of doing business there by phone lol
reply

Im from Kansas and everytime I go to Witchita I always wonder where all the people are cause I barely see a soul I'm from the KC side and it just seems like a different world.
reply

Yeah, we've got some run down areas. Show me any other big city that doesn't. Ya just can't win em all. Wichita Chicken tried, but they had a bad fire, and that was that.
reply

Playing around downtown. Not impressed. Try running up and down North and South Oliver over on the East side of town. It'll be interesting to see if you come out alive.
reply

Just FYI - in Kansas the Arkansas River is pronounced Ar-Kansas (not Ar-Kan-Saw); ) (yes, this is like Cario Illinois is pronounced Kay-Row, not Ky-Row)
reply

10: 22 That building is now called The National. They're now luxury apartments. That building has been though so many failed developments. One finally worked!
reply

It's NOT the Little Arkansas. it's the Little R-KANSAS river!
And, the FAA designation for Wichita is NOT 'icet. it is pronounced EYE-SEE-TEE!

reply

Wichita might be my four year old’s favorite word, due to the fact we love to jam to Seven Nations Army while driving.
I’m going to Wichita!

reply

In the summer, geese from Texas and Mexico summer here, and in winter, geese from Canada and the Dakotas winter here, so we got geese all year.
reply

Heh. I was born there, in St. Joseph's Hospital, waaay back in the 1950s. Never been back there since -- my people were Salina folks.
reply

Enjoy the videos very much. Just a note - When in Kansas - the state is pronounced Ar-kan-saw, but the river is pronounced Ar-KANSAS!
reply

Yup. The town I was born in is officially one of the ugliest places I have ever seen in my life. Full of dumps and boxes. Wow.
reply

If I'm not mistaken, the rivers are pronounced R-Kansas, not R-can-saw, which identifies you as an illiterate carpet bagger.
reply

So did Denis Rader's family have any idea of his activities I wonder where he did the torturing. Sad. Those poor women.
