The band's of people who do acts are called squads. Where I live the local primary school bairns do a squad as well. The main night lasts until around three in the morning while people dance and socialize (aka get way too drunk, including kids. The second night is called the hop night where locals perform and then the hall is cleared for a dance and 'socializing'. The third night is where the Viking squad gets their beards shaved into crazy and funny styles that they have to keep for a week. Most years the all us people who are underage just watch everyone else get drunk.

Great video One of my great grandfathers immigrated to America from the Shetlands in the late 1800s. My grandmother told me of our connection to Northern Scotland when I was young but I think even she didn't know the whole family history. I hope to take my sons to the Shetlands to experience their heritage and Up Helly Aa one day. Again, great video

How did you get to the Shetlands at this time of year? Did you fly in or ferry over? I would be interested in going to this festival. You said there are all kinds of celebrations throughout January to March, but is Uthis particular large festival with the burning boat and guizers always held at the same general time each year?

Everyone knows Christopher Columbus discovered America. And everyone knows that the Vikings had horned helmets. So of course both of these things are false. PS: a guiser is the same as a mummer, right?

I love all of your videos, but the background music tends to be distracting (like while the archeologist was talking) otherwise FANTASTIC all around information and production.
