Sleeping Bags For The Appalachian Trail Aaron: Don't worry about special down wash. Most powder (not liquid) detergent will be fine. I worked at outdoor stores selling gear before special down wash was a thing. It's just fancy marketing. Most older down gear care labels recommend powder detergent. Make sure to rinse your bag one or two extra times to get all of the soap out. Excess soap will weigh down the down (ha) and inhibit the insulating characteristics of down. Like you say in the video, washing a down bag on the trail is probably a no-go; down takes a loooong time to dry. Thanks for the great videos!

A technical point about your video, as a professional photographer and videographer. It is an interesting phenomena that the white balance in your video is constantly changing. That sometimes happens if you are in and out of cloud cover but that is not the case during the making of this video. I have never seen this phenomena before. What kind of camera did you shoot this on? The best way to fix the issue is to set the white balance manually and not let the camera's computer try to figure it out. Good luck and let me know what you figure out. Peace.

Hello, Just a suggestion that I did in the military while in the arctic. A nylon military poncho liner is a great item to use inside your sleeping bag for added warmth. This is also great for warmer weather when you need a light cover but not the sleeping bag. Advantage is if it turns colder during the night it is easy to slip into the sleeping bag with the poncho liner already around you. Happy trails. :)

hank seems really wonderful. miss my greyhounds. i have never washed any down products. i just air it out and damp cloth wipe the shell of my bag and jackets. same warmth even after decades. the smell goes away if u let it air out by hanging it. thats also the way i store in closet

Today I got a down bag from REI but also got a compression bag that was waterproof. The guy at REI showed me a smaller 55 degree bag that you can put in the down bag, so in the summer he uses just the 55 page and then in the winter just lines it inside the other.

Hey Dixie just looking at vids again and wondered if a 30 degree 800 fill down quilt would be sufficient for me on a thru hike starting in march? I do sleep warm but have had my share of shivering nights on trail from being damp from the days hike.

Hi, I have a question I'm just getting into backpack camping I was thinking of the sea to summit latitude II 15 degree bag, this is my first sleeping bag any thoughts? I was thinking this bag because I like a little more room, to toss and turn.

I tried the Zissou 23 in Sweden and got a bit of a shock when the weather dropped below 15. Although the sleeping mat helped massively, and my nuts shrinking, I just about survived! Not a bad sleeping bag

Thanks again Dixie. I am planning a hike on the AT. I am old and fat. It has been a dream of mine for many years. Keep up the good work kid. Wake us old folk up. We just may surprise you.

I didn't read all the comments so I hope I am not repeating something. When I started hiking I was told to make a note of the stuff I did not use and after a few trips discard it.
