I've watched at least 3 videos where you talk about trail runners vs boots. As a retired physical therapist I have a few comments. First off, your boots probably did not cause your Achilles tendonitis (or tendonosis) Look up Achilles tendonitis/tendonosis on Google. (That said, as you say, footwear is all a matter of choice) If you tolerate trail runners they save a lot of energy as you mentioned. However here in California, where many of us backpack in the Sierras, boots are often a better choice simply because the trails are so uneven and rocky. I have gone kinda halfway between boots and trail runners with midheight Merrills that are very light weight but have a stiffer sole like a boot. You have mentioned that you have had troubles with plantar fasciitis, and often something stiffer soled is better for PF. Those who have had troubles with plantar fasciitis should Google low die taping and learn how to do it. It can save a trip if PF begins to act up. I love your videos so hope you can tolerate a little well intentioned criticism.

Just got a pair of 4. 0s for summer backpacking. Been doing some training hikes in the mountains behind home (4, 000 foot elev gain. These shoes are amazing. I'm 63 and stopped running a few years ago because my knees hurt after 3 or so miles. I tried Hokas, but they didn't help. Then I got the Altras. Picked them up at the REI sale for 90. I've actually started running up and down the trail lately. My toes used to bash the front of other shoes. Not these. I'm nimble and quick. Last week, ran six miles on the beach with my wife. Everything felt great. I'm pretty amazed. Maybe it's the zero drop. I know not everyone loves it, but it works for me. Shoes are such a personal, subjective thing, as our feet and joints are all different. But if you have knee pain, might be worth a try. Going hike ten miles Saturday morning with a pack and see how they go.

I wanted to say Thank-you for getting me started on my journey. The information you share is very valuable. I love watching your videos. I want to start hiking I am getting my gear together little by little. My first purchase was inspired by you. I ordered a pair of Altra Lone Peak 3. 5. I tried them out in REI in Birmingham but ordered them on line. Right out of the box they were wonderful. I have Achilles tendonitis and bursitis in both feet and these shoes are amazing my feet don't hurt I can walk long distances without tiring or hurting and they work great for the gym too my feet don't slip in these shoes like in other sneakers. Thanks again for your videos

I had only bad experiences with altra. from fitting issues to them falling apart within 50 miles. But through that bad experience came a good, as I found topos. this company is very similiar to the style of altra but much better quality and they have a 4mm drop as opposed to a zero. I think most people who go from regular shoes to o drop can be have a rough transition. This makes it not quite as dramatic. In any event I found topo athletic shoes to be amazing. Wide toe box, very comfortable, and both my pairs lasted over 500 miles. Great vibram grip on the bottoms as well. Just some thoughts for anyone else that didn't like altras.

I think I missed this vid when it came out. Or maybe I'm just getting old enough that everything can be new again. Great break down. I made the same switch about 2 years ago. The Solomons felt great - for about 5 or maybe 10 miles. Then they would seriously start cramping my little toes. Altras have a footbox that is almost too wide for my semi-narrow feet those first few miles out, but boy do they feel great after that.

Great vid! My own Salomon-to-Altra switch brought me here. Just decided to get the Olympus 2. 5, to save a little money over the new 3. 0s (EDIT: I changed my mind to the Timp 1. 5, too many great reviews, had to try it. Can't wait to try them out! My Salomons have been solid & dependable. but it's time for more than that.

The bought a pair of Altra's and had to return them. I bought one size bigger to accommodate foot swelling. but could not get them on my feet even with the laces completely out. Bums me out. There are a nice looking shoe and I really did not want to return them but Altra needs to rethink the arch and the width.

Unfurtunally This shoes is not for me. I cant hike comfortable with it. Might be that my feet is not use to the shoes design. I was looking forward when bought it and had to return it. :(
I still wear my Salomon with not problems (my 1st option. I still searching for a lighter options. Any recommendations?

My normal shoe size: 10
My Salomon size: 11. 5
I think many people are buying too small, and suffering as a result.
However, I also found the Salomons not a perfect match for the overall shape of my feet. They are on the long and narrow side. It seems to be a common problem.

Shoes are a particular subject I don't think folks put enough study into. Every brand is going to fit differently and it's important to find one that fits you precisely. I wear Salomans because of the way they fit. YMMV.
