Today you can join in on the flightdeck of this KLM Martinair Cargo Boeing 747-400 ERF flying an instrument approach followed by a visual circling manoeuvre to land. The video starts in the descent over the north sea west of Amsterdam. We are then radar vectored via the north of Schiphol on a high extended right downwind for runway 27 (buitenveldertbaan. We intercept the ILS for 27 and are eventually given a breakoff to land on runway 24 (kaagbaan. The breakoff is a visual circling manoeuvre. First the instrument approach is followed for 27. When in an appropriate position the pilot then transitions to visual outside references to position the aircraft to land on a different runway. This procedure is often used during south-west storms when the wind only allows landings on 24. This time though, it just saved a lot of taxi time and fuel.

Never called it a breakoff landing in my 45 years in Aviation. Always called it a Side Step Maneuver where you need 2 parallel runways and use one to line up then side step to the parallel Must meet minimums and ATC approved. Unless that's what they call it in Europe, but the Airline I worked for had International flights.

Most enjoyable video and took me back nearly 25 years to some great times on the 747. Wondered why the FD's were being switched off and all became apparent, but the left turn off 24 was a surprise until it became apparent it was a cargo aircraft. Thanks for making an old man happy! :-)

Am not a Pilot ( I wish.
But Dont Pilots find it annoying to have that middle bar right in the middle of the front windscreen.
Cant Boeing or Airbus design the Windscreen without that Bar with all the technology we have today.
Or Pilots dont find them a bother?

7: 03 With the way that the sunlight is coming through the clouds, is it just me, or does it look like they're flying into a city that just got nuked? ;) Nice landing! Love watching these clips!

Why do planes need steering columns - the pilots barely touch them. All they do is push buttons and turn dials lol. The computer does most of the flying. Pretty scary when you think about it.

Smooth landing captain and your co pilot. This the amazing landing on a airplane. My deep respect for all crews landing this aircraft until a safe landing.

At 7: 51 is the Johan Cruijff Arena for footballteam Ajax in Amsterdam. The plane was first aligned for the Buitenveldertbaan, but changed it to the Kaagbaan.

You guys are the true definition of bad asses! That's a big chunk of metal to be getting back down on the ground like that let alone up in the air
