Im a Toyota guy. Ive owned Toyotas for about 20 years. Alex, I completely disagree with you about the BMW tie-up. I buy Toyotas knowing that I will give up some excitement and in return get Toyota reliability. That is why we buy Toyotas. Toyota makes several excellent V6 engines, both naturally aspirated and turbocharged. As much as I like inline-6 engines, I would much rather have a Toyota-developed V6 than a BMW-sourced inline-6. BMW sadly has a history of serious reliability issues, and this car is a BMW built by Magna Steyr in Austria. I dont have a problem with the ZF automatic (other than the fact that there is no manual transmission available. As automatics go, the ZF is one of the best. I despise the BMW shifter, though that is a rant for another day. The styling is, frankly, hideous. The fake vents are atrocious. They can make up whatever stories they want about the fake vents, but fake vents just suck -- they are indicative of lazy designers. The visibility looks poor, with very short side windows. Toyota blew this. Toyota spent a great deal of money developing the 200 Series Land Cruiser, even though it also sells in very low numbers, but that is a Toyota through-and-through, with legendary Toyota reliability. Toyota chose not to make the same investment in the Supra. That is their decision. My decision in response is that I wont buy this car; it simply isnt a Toyota. If I want to buy a BMW, Ill go to the BMW dealer and buy one.

If you think the interior is reminiscent of Toyota - you better look again. It is BMW through and through. Good thing they defined the driver zone with red, otherwise how would we know where to sit? Turbo lag in the MKIV sequential system? No - it was very responsive. Larger single turbos had definite lag, but not the stock twins. Of course, turbo tech has changed a lot in 17 years, so it should be better. I have a small single on my MKIV and it has almost no lag. Yes - Supra purists, i. e, those that know and understand the previous generations, dont like it being a BMW. While an inline six is ideal for balance, if it comes from BMW it will not be reliable. Automatics are so good these day, it is a mixed bag, but many still want a manual option in a sports car. A sprinkle of BMW DNA? Why not? This is built with BMW parts throughout and will be as unreliable as other BMWs. Get rid of it before the engine takes a dump after 3-4 years. That is why not. Toyota should have called this something else. It is only a marginal improvement over the previous generation - 17 years ago No, I will not be buying one since it is basically a BMW.

Alex always speaks from manufacturers stand point. Purist cant quite digest the new iteration as Supra coz this misses out on a tonne of stuff. Firstly, the old supra was made a legend due to its high tuneability. Secondly, it doesnt break easily and toyota definitely over built the 2JZ for a 300 hp inline 6 making it extremely reliable. Thirdly, that car was really meant to be driven. no mommys transmission wont deliver the feel anything close to a stick shift. Zfs 8 speed is one of the best, no denying that. moreover the older supra wasnt a typical corolla or camry in sales figures. therefore like what you said going through the trouble of creating an all new engine they shared it. fine. then why the hell they name it as SUPRA y 86 sport of sth like that. simply marketing gimmick. DOnt know the reason why ALEX isnt speaking from an enthusiasts standpoint. Many so called purists hypes a lot about steering feel and driving engagement and uses a mommys transmission. WHy do they even need a sports car then. Loved the video but this is the first time i totally disagree with ALEX and was disappointed about his views

Toyota made a great decision using BMW as their component supplier. The B58 inline six and ZF 8 speed are the most reliable setup on the planet. The BMW center stack is also amazing. People want a MT or a toyota made inline six. Yet this is the fastest production toyota ever built. It will destroy the older supra. The ZF 8 speed will outperform any MT by a wide margin. It would have cost Toyota a ton in research to design another inline six. And BMW has made the best inline 6 all along. Plus the MPGs on this powerplant are very good. This is fast and also will provide bullet proof reliability. Toyota knew they could not provide this kind of powertrain in house. Not even remotely so. They have been out of the loop for too long. Ive never cared for the Z4 but like this one. But the Z4 has a convertible which is nice. I would probably want the soft top for a two seat roaster. This will be hot cake when it hits the lots.

A manual is not needed to be faster or more efficient, come on now. And because of the lighter weight, with a great driver it might actually be faster on some circuits, just not on the dragstrip, where lauch control computers take over the acceleration runs. A manual is for MORE FUN and man to machine FEEL and CONTROLI mean soon self driving cars will be faster not just in a straight dragship, but on twisty race track, and people will say bring the steering wheel back. A manual is about purity, and human control and satisfaction, and fun. The exact thing that computers, lauch control, autos, DSGs, self driving, and safety system and traction and stability control have taken away.

A good review, but this car is very disappointing (and I dont care about the BMW tie-up, thats fine. Automatic only? Feels like a typical Lexus luxury sports sedan? OK, the ZF 8 speed is one of the best autos there is, and Lexus has been making good sport sedans for years, but this is the SUPRA for crissakes Its a sports car Instead its like they gave us a 2-door BMW 3-series with no chance to enjoy the third pedal experience. I find that incredibly lame and unappealing as a sports car enthusiast.

I think Toyota made a solid business decision in collaborating with BMW in creating its homage to the Mk4 Supra. This presentation of the car more or less cements that impression. Matter of fact, the way this car is presented here, I can clearly see a solid substitute for my long-desired coupe, the E86 Z4M. I can forgive the lack of a manual since the automatic provides me a spare driver (who cant manage a manual) on long road trips. In my life thats a fair trade off. YMMV. :)

I have no problems with joint ventures like this in general, but it IS a shame that they chose to use the legendary Supra name for this. A heritage/halo model like the Supra should have been developed completely in-house. but, oh well, its all about the money, after all. Lets just hope that BMW improved on their reliability. Edit: Oh, god that shifter. one of those yucky digital BMW-type ones. plus, no manual? Yeah, this car is a missed opportunity.

Honestly Toyota you guys couldve built this car by yourselves. You built the LFA for crying out loud. Yes its a Lexus technically but youOwn Lexus and therefore the knowledge and where with all you couldve used to make an engine and platform. You have a great 3. 6 V6. And throw a turbo on it. There you have your engine. You have more than enough money to make it yourself. But as is its an excellent car.

Car and Driver got a 3. 8 sec 0-60 time after adjusting the brake torqueing on launch. That puts this squarely as fast to 60 as a 5. 0 GT with the 10-speed. That said, the weight balance and interior of the Supra is definitely better than the Camaro or Mustang. I like both domestics, a lot, but Id be more inclined to get the Supra as well, Alex. Thanks for a fantastic review.
