2022 Hyundai Tucson First Look

Hyundai's most important vehicle launch of the decade is upon us: the new Tucson. Hyundai's best-selling vehicle is getting some big changes for 2022 (and 2021 in Korea where we will see it first. Base models get a new 2. 5L engine and there will be a 1. 6L turbo hybrid and a plug in hybrid model as well, although the PHEV probably won't be coming to the USA. There's a much more upscale interior with more LCD real estate that ever before and a much more angular exterior design

The one thing I wish more companies would do is what chevy and gmc are doing with the SUV's, making push button transmissions ON THE DASH. Why clutter up the center console with those buttons when you could either have infotainment controls, storage or literally anything useful. If they were really itching for a symetrical design then just do a knob like ram did, or the buttons behind the center stack by where the push button ignition is. This is not a hyundai specific complaint as much as everyone who still uses console shifters (stick, knob or button) for automatics, unless its for some reason still a mechanically shifted auto in 2020.

I think the reason Hyundai decided to go all out on the styling was probably after watching Toyotas Rav4 with its similarly rugged styling direction (black cladding) keep it's title as best selling crossover in the US they must have figured it wouldn't hurt to spice the Tucson up a bit. I do believe Hyundai has used Toyota as a benchmark and tried to build its reliability, ease of ownership reputation as they did.
That being said, I do hope we get the longer wheelbase and it translate well into the cargo area. The ONLY reason I went with the Rav4 over the Tucson was because of the tight cargo capacity in the outgoing Tucson.

Alex. Do you like this better than the new 2021 Santa Fe? Looks like an A+. The problem is this isn't coming out this year but mid 2021, while the Santa Fe is out in a few months. The Santa Fe has a new platform. Is this platform much better than the Tuscon? Is the Tuscon platform new, or just the design? I think I like the Tuscon better. It's probably lighter and handles better. It has a 2. 5 L engine. And it also has an N version. And it looks as good as the Santa Fe if not better.

alex!
you LIKE this look?
why? are things getting that unglued that the more terrorism in design, the better?
lines, lines everywhere, not a rounded corner anywhere.
those rediculous air scoops on the lower front corners are, simply, hideous.
sorry. but i thought nothing could out-bad the lexus alien faces, but hyundia seems to be trying, starting with the pinched child's face on the palisades and others.

I don't know about that interior. It looks uninspired and bland to me. LCD instrument panels don't look good. If you want to see an actual implementation that's interesting, look at what BMW or Audi is doing. I don't mind the look of the center dash, it looks functional and simple to me. I like that, the center console should be simple and easy to use, but it's not interesting or innovative.

Looks great! Alex suggests the PHEV version probably won't come to the U. S. because Hyundai wants to make sure customers of their IONIQ line of EVs get their 7, 500 IRS tax credits. Maybe so, but will it be too tempting for Hyundai to offer a PHEV to compete against the RAV4 Prime?

Fantastic design!
The new Sonata introduced bits and pieces of the sporty/angular design language and they are making the move towards a cohesive product line while not implementing the boring nesting doll technique of many auto manufacturers.
Kudos to their design team!

1. Hyundai says they have made 12 engines for this Tucson
2. The hybrid can drive from Tucson, Arizona to LA on one tank, but that means it probably doesn't get 40 MPG
3. The interior is clearly best in class for design and materials. Closer to Mercedes than Honda

I'm not a fan at all of the fact that the climate controls have no real buttons. I get that they're trying to get with the times or be more technologically advanced, but the Tuscon is competing with the Rav4 and CR-V, not the Model Y or Range Rover Evoque

That interior is gorgeous! I also really like the front and rear designs, but think there's too much going on in the side styling. The Elantra had the same problem. Still, this is a big advance over the very bland previous Tucson, especially inside.
