2020 - 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid The Best Compact Crossover #02 T Urb: I like this version of the Rav4 and XSE but. we have a 2013 Prius v and has reached 130k miles and is burning oil. Toyota was no help when I called. I researched and found 2010 to 2014 models have this problem. Alex, do you know if Toyota has addressed this defect of burning oil? /

Please forgive my ignorance in how this hybrid system works. Where I'm confused is the planetary transmission. In normal hybrids, the gas engine provides the power by generating electricity for the electric motor that goes through the transmission and thus the wheels. But here the electric motor is in the back. Does this mean the rear starts it going until it goes fast enough for the transmission to engage the gas engine and then both contribute to powering the wheels? Is there a second electric motor between the gas engine and the transmission? Does this mean that regeneration is accomplished only through the rear wheels and that's why you have less compression braking? The gas engine disengages and possibly turns off and only the rear wheels povide some breaking through regeneration? Does the planetary transmission rely on bands to provide initial engagement and slip when taking off?

We drove it last month, hoping it would be the perfect 'one vehicle for us. We were disappointed by it's handling characteristics, not up to European standards, by a long shot. And, we love Toyota, having owned several thru the years, a 15 Sienna SE and a 4th generation Prius lately, having much better driving manners. For those interested in one of these cars, consider the competition, unless mpg is number one priority. Finally, the price of an LE is just under 30k, not a bad value, but not so great as the price approaches mid to high 30's. We will eventually drive the new Outback and CRV, and Mazda CX-5 to compare. Thanks for the review.

Now Im torn. The rav4 is a very tempting option for me. I cannot decide between a loaded rav4 limited gas or hybrid, or a loaded v6 Camry XSE. Both are similar in price but the tradeoffs are different.

Be warned the XSE model with projector LED headlights have a safety poor rating. Being the owner of an XSE is agree these headlights at night are a disappointment, and not upgradable.

Toyota hybrids are very reliable but the repair costs can get damn expensive when they age. The RAV4 may be the next vehicle I buy to replace my 2009 CRV
