GMs Super Cruise system is the first hands-off driving aid sold in America. While it isn really an autonomous driving system per se, it is an important step in that direction. In this video we give the system a detailed test and answer all your burning questions

If the System only slows down and does not take any other evasive action for other cars (or even people, in the mapped roads) cutting you off, potholes or debris in the road, there is no reason to take your hands off of the steering wheel, which by definition delays said evasive action. I absolutely love my Honda Sensing System, which can help reduce driver fatigue somewhat, by ASSISTING with steering and speed control, but I NEVER take both hands off of the wheel just because I can, nor allow myself to be flat-footed because of the speed control. I noticed that you had your hands off of the steering wheel even when there were cars around you. I dont think the hands-off method would work where I live, even with Lidar-mapped roads. Roads may be predictable, but People can be unpredictable. Plus if the car decides to follow a long line of liquid tar crack repair that looks like a line, rather than the correct white line, or any other road feature that may fool or deviate from the System, or a pothole or rut that could destroy my tires or my suspension, my hands are already on the wheel for immediate correction.

Great thorough review. But you your perception on LiDAR maps is wrong. Any system that relies on LiDAR maps or HD maps or whatever you want to call them will FAIL. All of them. Its not an advantage, its a handicap. The only way to reach autonomy on our current roadways is through vision AI. period. All serious engineers in this space know this. And that means this system isnt even in the same universe as Teslas Auto Pilot. Tesla is solving the vision problem. and continually updating their software (and hardware) to existing vehicles. The super cruise team is not. Super Cruise in this form will never be more than a convenience assist feature, while Auto Pilot has a real shot at achieving autonomy.

The car makers, who were on the verge of bankruptcy and asking for a government bailout about 10 years ago, now spend untold sums of money on this inherently risky driving technology. Those resources would be better allocated to giving us better fuel economy and overall value for purchase price. Not all fancy tech equals progress. As you take driver input out of vehicle operation, you see drivers who are unaware of whats going on as they move at 90+ feet per second. I wonder if an emergency vehicle will be stuck behind a car thats on autopilot. Im glad that self driving cars will likely not mature into the mainstream in my lifetime.

For me, the pattern of vaporware regarding autonomous driving is well established. All we really want is to be able to sleep or read while on long highway stretches, and even THAT seems to be far in the future. The legal hurdles may end up being bigger than the technological ones, in the end. Super cruise is a neat gadget, but its basically pointless if you have to keep looking at the road. My guess is that it will be 20 years before we have anything resembling autonomous driving, and it will be another 20 after that before you can even think of having a car without a steering wheel. Ill be long dead, so I dont care

It seems like a lot of complexity, cost, and risk for very little reward. If you cannot drive a car yourself and pay attention, you should probably stay at home. What is the first symptom of this system suddenly breaking down? ANSWER = You go flying off the road. Will you want to bother to fix this system on a 8 year old car? Do many people have home computers 8 years old that still work perfectly, if they ever did? Bells and whistles may be great for Santa Claus on Christmas Day, but do you really want them in your car?

Not sure I am O. K. with this semi drivers aid. If the rational for it is to help the driver actually drive, (both hands on the wheel and paying attention) then maybe at best. However, the end game is gonna be for the driver that does everything BUT drive/pay attention Until all highways are mapped for lidar/flir then its a matter of time before someone is killed as part of this future effort by/for distracted drivers thinking I dont have to pay attention anymore.

I think self-driving features are now the opposite of whats really needed. I start getting sleepy after 3 hours of highway driving without regular cruise control. With regular (non-radar) cruise, I get sleepy after about 2 hours. Instead of disengaging at a critical moment, a truly helpful assist system would self-engage if driver fails to control, pull over when safe and bring a car to a stop. I dont need autopilot when Im awake.

Awesome video, as always, Alex I personally find this system to be extremely innovative. Honestly, I cannot wait for the expansion of systems similar to this. Yes. It may be new (and some people may not feel entirely comfortable with it, but its all a learning a curve that essentially must be taken for other better/ more intuitive systems to follow. From one car enthusiast to another, keep up the great work

Assuming Caddy will update their routes (beyond the 160, 000 miles already mapped, how will super-cruise equipped Caddys get the updates? Is it a software update done at the dealer? Is an update provided via satellite? Is their a fee for the updates? Are updates even available once you buy a Caddy or are you just s. o. l?

I think its a very intelligent gradual approach to full autonomy. The database limits you to what it knows, and hands back any scenario that looks sketchy to the driver. The system knows what it knows and doesnt try to just bluff it out while three seconds later slamming you into a pylon or firetruck.
