2018 Compact Crossover Off Road Comparison

Thanks to an event called the Trail Trek Tour I had the opportunity to test a variety of every-day crossovers on some back-country trails in Virginia. The results were about as I expected but there were a few crossovers that did better than I thought. Why no Subaru? Why no Rogue? Why no X? The answer is simple: all were invited, but only these 7 chose to attend. For more info, check out TrailTrekTour. com

After watching so many of your videos on crossovers, I was set on the CR-V. but I couldnt quite afford any post 2017 (must have the new tail lights: ). I was pretty much set on the lower-priced Crosstrek, but when I discovered the Kona, I just couldnt resist the even lower price of the SEL (unfortunately, couldnt find any Turbo Limiteds and the Ultimate is way too pricey. All I really needed was good AWD (incl. downhill control) for street packed-snow hills rather than off road, and didnt really need all that space. Im happy with its IIHS ratings, too. Im looking forward to your review and what youre going to say about its interior, though. Its so compact that the only storage it has besides the boot is a very tiny cubby with no tray and the glove box. The Samsung S9 doesnt fit flat in the phone spot with the required USB connected, either. But, hey, a visit to the auto parts store and Im sure Ill find some over the seat or console storage options or something. Anyway. love the reviews. theyve helped me tremendously during my car buying experience. So, Thanks

Alex, I love and appreciate your videos and you taking part in this Trail Trek Tour event. However, I think the entire concept of this comparison is bogus and about as valid as taking all of these models to a track day to see who performs best compared to a Porsche. Do this same test and add a front-wheel drive Camry or Accord and youll see those _cars_ perform about as well as most of these crossovers. These AWD crossovers are not built for off-road (sans the Jeep Trailhawk models which _are_ specifically built for such. The AWD in these models is for poor road conditions due to weather (rain, snow, ice, etc, not for rock crawling. I think this is misleading to consumers who might need a true trail vehicle and think these models can actually cut it.

Shame Subaru couldnt join the party, we just went to the new CX-5 after 3 years of Subaru XV Crosstrek ownership, in those 3 years the XV always felt full time AWD regardless of how slippery the road, mud, gravel or even light snow was. No matter what Mazda say about their 18 CX5 AWD being as good as Subarus in the 3 months have owned it there have already been a couple of times its felt a brief FWD indecision in slippery on road conditions before the rears engaged. Not bad just not quite as good as Subarus and the XVs extra clearance was also comforting on mild firetrails similar to your test to get to some of our favourite bushwalks.

Alex- love your reviews. BUT could you please try and cut down on the of course usage. In this last review you did it twice within 5 words in the same sentence (Jeep Cherokee comments at the end) Were here to learn. Of course signifies that what youre going to tell is something we should already know. If its worth your telling us, then of course you dont need to modify it with an of course. (See what I did there)Anyway, I really appreciate the thoroughness of your reviews and all your hard work. Just trying to help you make them even better. Cheers.

Alex, I always enjoy your road test. This time, I found this test bizarre We all know that the compact crossover are made to carry family and their gear, not for going trail riding. What is the number of those vehicles going on the trails? I think im not mistaking if I say less then 5% or even lower. Even a FWD only would had succeed on that easy trail. Peoples by them for comfort, reliability and cargo capacity. My choice: The Subaru Forester.

Not a fair fight. The all new 2019 Rav-4 is just a couple of months away. Current model is almost 4 and half years old while all the other competitors have got either their mid cycle refresh or all new models already, plus we dont have 2019 Forester yet either. Hence makes this comparison really a weak one. You guys should have really waited for those vehicles to come out and then do the comparison

Cherokee is an unreliable junk pile, I know because I owned one. I Traded it off for a Honda. I agree with you on the Honda CRV. It is very competitive and screwed together nicely. I would love to see you test all these models in the snow. That is more of the urban challenge drivers will face and difficult to find reviews on. Great overview as always. Keep up the good work.

Automatic disqualification of the video under 1-minute when he chooses the Subcompact Kona to represent Hyundai instead of the Compact Tucson, which would be the actual car to compete in this segment. He needs to get off that Kona obsession and if hes going to compare compact SUVs he needs to use compact SUVs. like the Tucson.

Off road and deep snow, the Cherokee is best option. It has the best AWD system and ground clearance. Plus it has the most torque with the turbo. Its also sized right in the middle. If you want more on road performance choose the Latitude Plus or Limited trims. But if youre an adventure the Cherokee or a Subaru are the best options

Lots of Subaru love in the comments (Im actually looking at trading in for a 2019 Ascent) would have loved to have seen Jaguar E-Pace and Range Rover Evoque since they updated to the Active Driveline Trans. Cant test what ya dont have tho. Maybe next year. Also the new JL Wrangler, king of the Off Roaders.
