2025 Genesis G80 First Drive - This Is The Lexus GS That Should Have Been

The G80 is the car that launched a brand, and perhaps that's why despite declining sedan sales in N. America, Genesis remains dedicated to a mid-sized E-Class fighter in the USA, even after Lexus gave up on the GS. If you're looking for a unique alternative to the 5-Series, A6, or E-Class, give the G80 a long hard look. But also, give the GV80 coupe a good look as well.

Beautiful car inside and out. Easily the best looking sedan in its class by quite some margin. Love that Genesis makes proper rwd based luxury cars. I do miss some of the pre refresh interior but overall this interior is gorgeous. I just wish they would ditch the piano place plastic on the dash around the buttons. I get that they made it shiny to blend in with the screen but because of the overuse of piano black plastic by the auto industry, I cringe any time I see shiny black surfaces.

I don't believe that it is accurate to state that Honda and Toyota introduced their new upscale marques with warmed over existing mainstream models. The Legend and the LS400 were designed from scratch to set a new standard for Acura and Lexus. It is true that following models may have been related to Honda and Toyota vehicles, but the top models were never clones of models in the mainstream vehicle lineup, and in the case of the Lexus LS this is still true.

If you fly to Korea and take an uber there, you will see that they've been building rolls Royce style Korean luxury cars for years. South Korea is such an insular market where Korean brands dominate many industries and foreign brands barely exist they just decided to ship them outside South Korea. just don't take your uber from the incheon. it's so far from Seoul and will cost a fortune. you better take a bus.

The new OLED is horrible, like every other company in the industry Genesis follows this trend. The gauge cluster screen is not centered now and the wheel comes in your sight. The old design is better and in better focused position.
The new wheel is better than the old anyway.
Hopefully Genesis has solved some issues in this new model, like the rattling sunroof.

New BMW 530i/540i are 199. 2in long. New E class is 194. 9in long. Its actually not really that long for the segment anymore. Every cat company is making newer models so much larger. New compact Equinox EV is onky 2in shorter than the midsize Blazer EV. I think the IS500 is like 187in long and the Accord is 195. 7 long. Funny how large cars are getting.

Rest in peace Lexus. Genesis has objectively ended them.
It’s safe to say Alex that Lexus ostensibly no longer exists. The less said about Lexus the better. Do us a favor Alex and don’t bother wasting your time reviewing Lexus products anymore. They’re all too mediocre and they’re just uncompetitive

Great review! They still can't get the rear seats to fold down though - MAJOR oversight! Also, their 6 cyl gets the same mpg as BMWs twin turbo V8, making 523hp. So, gas mileage is abysmal, IMO. I do love the spare tire though - and the soft suspension.

couldn't wait for this! We have a GV80 that's been fantastic and I just bought a 21 530i with 40k miles. Liking the bmw so far but love the styling and exclusivity of the G80! will pick up one in a year or so thanks alex

Genesis should gravitate towards the hybrid in all their vehicles and this to me will create a stir in the mid-sized luxury segment hybrid should be introduced in both 4 and 6 cylinder offerings

Genesis has overtaken Lexus in terms of a true Luxury offering in this segment. From the recent refreshes, its clear that they are no longer committed to pursuing perfection. Not even close!

It has what appears to be an IR driver monitoring system; it would be really interesting if Genesis came out with a Super Cruise style system before it's Japanese, German competitors did.

If I could afford one (and
I can't. I would go with the G80 3. 5 twin turbo. Of course lease only. I just imagine resale on Genesis is akin to Hyundai and drops like a rock.

3: 25 Volvo hasn’t made an S80 since 2016, although I wouldn’t blame you for melding all of Volvo’s sedans into one model given how understated and similar they are.

The front end continues to be the aesthetic weak spot of what is otherwise a very handsome car. I also wish the wheels didn’t have the overly busy waffle design.

This is the exact sort of car where the EV would be the obvious choice. Hyundai has charging figured out, with enough range this would be a road trip beast.
