Thank God it wasn't just a longer blob of Toyota Highlander. I see some Sequoia squareness in the side profile. Overall, it is definitely hip to be square these days.
The grille just seems to be yanked from other Toyota model styles, which seems to be a tad bit lazy. And I'm curious about the weight of this with the Hybrid Max power. As for the interior, well, again where's the beef? So much has been made about this vehicle to finally take it to the H/K twins, Grand Cherokee, and now Mazda CX-90. This is functionally sufficient, but won't set anything ablaze in luxury or wow factor(yes I know Lexus exists, but they too come across as Toyota premium than Lexus opulent these days.
Finally, pricing will be the key indicator, but Toyota will sell these by the train load most certainly. If anything, the current regular Highlander may be endangered.

I don't hate this thing. I like that it's honest in what it is, and good on Toyota for not neutering the Land Cruiser name on this appliance car (unlike say the Chevy Blazer. It seems to nail its intention, and I'm sure will sell well. It is odd in its styling in that it's really hard to tell the size of it - it doesn't have any kind of visual 'grandness' in terms of scale - if you said it was the new Rav4 I'd have believed you, even with Alex standing next to it. Perhaps not a bad thing - it's as unintimidating as a full-size SUV can be. Toyota is having a renaissance in general I think!

It looks like a stretched Rav4 but with a monster grille. That HybridMax powertrain needs an in-house Toyota built 10-speed auto to help it become as efficient as possible while staying current & competitive.
A 6-speed auto is already considered obsolete. Even Mazda is leaving the 6-speed auto behind starting with the CX-90 getting a new 8-speed auto.
This is definitely a step in the right direction for Toyota but I don't think their execution was as polished as it could have been. I feel like they rushed to get this out into the market.

I ve never liked not having an option of a 2nd row bench on the top trims. It s not a deal breaker by itself. I bought a Subaru Ascent Limited in part because I could still option a 2nd row bench seats. The Higher Touring trim was only available with captains seats (and brown leather interior, blahh. It s a minor thing but not in the way I use my vehicle. Fully flat cargo space comes in handy for work and car camping. I will definitely consider this as an upgrade once I know the fuel economy of the Hybrid Max.

Ok except for the front grill. Never understood the no bumper design? Any bump on the front will cause damage. I answered my own question after I researched NHTSA: The Federal bumper standard does not apply to sport utility vehicles (SUVs, minivans, or pickups trucks; only passenger cars. The agency has chosen not to regulate bumper performance or elevation for these vehicle classes because of the potential compromise to the vehicle utility in operating on loading ramps and off road situations.

Interesting that this GH has up to 33% more room in back than the CX-90. I read that this will have 98 cu ft behind the first row (with all seats folded down, whereas the new Pilot has 113 cu ft. I will be interested to see the two (GH and CX-90) side-by-side. And it just fries my hide that I can't get the Platinum with a 2nd-row bench seat. Same with new Mazda. And I would have to buy the Platinum to get a head-up display, so I'm out of luck if I want that 2nd row bench.

I'm very tall, so I'm all about head and legroom. I have sat in the current Highlander and find it just a bit too small. I'm really hoping they added enough room in this one so that I am able to drive it. I'm also hoping they offer the ability to get it decently optioned up without being forced to get a sunroof, but I'm not holding my breath. I see this as a direct competitor to the new Honda Pilot and that can at least be had with a leather interior and no sunroof.

Where s the heated third row seats? Massaging drivers seat? Toyota could have really set a new bar and offered ventilated 3rd row seats, 4 zone climate control, power tilt telescope wheel to really stand out, 4 way lumbar for driver and passenger, real wood trim, rib ambient lighthing
As I thought Toyota failed to surpass the telluride palisade. No surprise really

My first impression: Ugly boxy look, usless third row, cement color and over priced. I was a potential Highlander hybrid buyer. I was hoping for a better ride than the RAV4 without a third row seat. I wish you would realize that a lot of people don't want to carry a bunch of noisy people, and would rather carry more cargo. Get rid of the third row useless third row seats.

Alex, When it comes to family vehicles, Boxier = Better. Let's hope the 2. 5 Hybrid system keeps up the impressive economy while offering adequate 'performance'. The newly generous third row poses quite a dilemma as it is far too spacious for Naughty Children and Mothers in Law. It seems it will now be necessary to fasten them to the roof rack.

Nice looking That was one of my biggest complaints about the Mazdas they always lose out on interior room because of that long hood they need to change their look and crunch that hood down if they are serious about competing. for a vehicle this size, a 4 cylinder is just not going to cut it with a full load we ll see when you get it on the road!

Egregious mistake when Toyota made the Sequoia less practical than the Grand Highlander!
Not so much a fan of the supersized RAV4 look and while front end makes an acceptable impression of the 4Runner, that chrome bar is tacky. Also think that a PHEV variant is more important to the GH line-up than the Hybrid Max option.

This looks good and quite attractive on the outside. The interior while an upgrade over the HL is not as premium looking compared to the Koreans or the CX-90.
I wonder if Toyota would do a Grand Sequoia. I know they're definitely working on a 3-row Lexus model based on this (TX has already been patented.

A regular Highlander XLE AWD costs 43k so this will probably start at 45k (or 44k with FWD. That would be similar to the Preferred Plus trim on CX-90. Weird how Toyota doesn't offer a lower trim. Probably bc they know that demand will be higher than supply anyways, might as well cut the base trims.
