We Just Bought A 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV!

Behold! Our new long term tester is the PHEV you asked for: the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. With 38 miles of range and a teeny-tiny third row the Outlander is trying to carve quite a different niche from the other PHEVs (or even small CUVs in general) available in N. America!

That front design is a mess and I get the sense that nobody actually designed it; it was rather a janky compromise between ideas from different parties. There are way too many distinct elements here that do not have any sense of harmony. Otherwise, it seems like a very nice vehicle, if a bit large and expensive for our purposes. Good to see the Honda-style serial-parallel hybrid scheme on a non-Honda; in my experience it usually gives a really wonderfully smooth ride and allows for a lot of simplification in design.

For a guy that loves an emergency 3rd row, you sure do you wanna remove it a lot and permanently. Shouldn t you have just got a SantaFe PHEV which in other markets has a third row but Hyundai was smart enough to remove it for the US? I don t have any crumb crunchers or mother-in-law so the 3rd row is useless to me. Was it the narrow width that was appealing for your driveway or was it the challenge of finding a dying Fast DC charging plug in? 10: 57

Very cool. Would love to see EV range in normal as well as hyper mile type scenarios. And also regarding third row use, would be cool to have a review with actual kiddos to see if it s acceptable for families and such.

This third row is an unwanted handicap, a good enough reason to not buy this car. I'd much rather have a spare tire. Question: is its drivetrain the same as e-Power? When are we going to see e-Power Nissans in the US?
reply

those are strange headlights. I thought the top were heads, and the bottom are fogs. Better this way I suppose, no blinding people, we'll let all the lympducks, bronco and ram owners blind everyone while driving

Not sure on anything Mitsubishi, very hard to find a dealership (the brand is barely in the country.
In our area, the dealership owner bretends he is a king with a crown and cape. simply crazy!

Wow you did it Alex! It is exciting as a last gen GG2W owner to see you brought the GN3W, I have been on the fence of buying this car for a while, so looking forward to your long term testing!

Glad to see it. I m tempted but I just don t know much about that brand.
I love my PHEV but I could use more storage. This might fit the bill.
This should be a nice series for me.

Oh dang LOL I can t believe people forced you into this bad investment. Kudos for keeping your word and buying this depreciation trap. Hope the voters actually watch the videos

You keep saying that the front of the Sportage is polarizing, but THIS car is worse in my opinion. I still like it though. I'm looking forward to all the testing you do!

wanna see if you're able to have a flat cargo space with rear seats folded. if not, how it's gonna feel like if car camping is the purpose here. thanks

Alex, Some of us asked for something else. Having said that, we will be very curious to know your mpg when you do a long road trip to southern California.
reply

1. How does it handle 2 car seats, rear facing
2. How are the massaging seats?
3. You need to put Brian in the third row. You just have to

The closest Mitsubishi dealer from me is 70 miles away. With the lack of dealer support, this would be a pass although I like the vehicle
