Is Hyundai's 2023 IONIQ 6 The Future Of American Sedans?

With range being one of the most important factors when choosing a new EV, it's not too surprising that we're seeing so many new EV sedans in America. After all, efficiency is king. Hyundai is now joining the pack with a new IONIQ 6 that'll sport over 360 miles of range and 18 minute quick charging (10-80%. If you're looking for a road tripping EV, this is one hot option to look at. For the full review, check out the EV Buyers Guide channel next week! Heidi: I personally prefer the Ionic5, mainly due to its more upright profile. I current drive a 2020 Soul EV, and much appreciate the airy, roomy interior due to its upright design, a benefit that I enjoy every single time I drive it -- meanwhile the swoopy design of some current EVs would benefit me only on those very rare occasions where I was taking a long trip. Between benefitting from the increased room and visibility every day, or having to charge maybe 50 kms sooner on a long trip, I'll take the extra space every time.

It's a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10. The problem is, either wages and SS will have to rise drastically or prices will have to be reduced by a battery breakthrough. We now have a situation where most people cannot afford to buy a house or a new electric car. This will lead to a collapse or a resurrection. One thing is certain, we do not have enough charging stations to accommodate even 25% of the population buying electric vehicles. Government should not mandate and partially finance automobile ownership, so get rid of the mandates and timetables and come back to the hard numbers and reality.

The fact that something looks efficient and has an efficient shape, doesn t mean it is. The Ioniq is a heavy beast, which makes it not very efficient with its batteries and that s why it s pure necessity to have the ability to charge fast, because you ll be doing it a lot. Also finding a 350kw charger is a challenge and DC charging that fast kills your battery faster than you can imagine. Experienced EV owners know that 8 out 10 charges are done at home or a free destination AC charger at the mall.

360 miles of range and 18 minutes of charging is getting to where someone living in an apartment can own this without spending their evenings trying to charge the car. I frequently drive 100 miles round trip for work, if I can go to the store every other day to pick up a couple things and keep my car charged, that's great.
Now no Hyundai dealer is going to sell this for less than 10-15k of markup. You really shouldn't review Hyundais and talk about MSRP as if it's a meaningful number.

I wish reviewers would start looking beyond efficiency and range and start considering/including the overall cost to the consumer and the environment. EV's are more expensive and they have an environmental cost just like ICE cars before and after they leave the showroom. They also have to refuel from the grid which isn't a free lunch environmentally. I'm not against EV's, I just think too many people think they have little to no impact on the environment.

I've been following the rollout of this car for months, and so far I've not seen a single photo or video of the front end with a North American sized license plate affixed. If someone has a link to such a photo, please post it in reply to this comment. I'm wondering where it attaches so that it doesn't affect either the forward-facing sensors or the air intake louvers. Thanks!

The 361 mile range Ioniq 6 goes so far because it is only RWD. The Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor AWD goes the same distance. The AWD Ioniq 6 has way less range! What is with Hyundai and Kia's EVs that they lose so much range in their AWD and Performance Models? The Kia EV6 GT loses 30% of its range whereas the Performance Tesla Model Y hardly loses any

How long until car makers finally figure out that the point of EV cars isn't to be an expensive, mega-horsepower, status symbol? The only realistic cars on the market are the Leaf and the Bolt. Until they start mass-producing cheap, long-range EV cars they have zero chance of supplanting ICE cars.

I know I m going to be in the minority when I say this, but I think it is one of the most unattractive (to be kind) vehicle I ve ever seen in my life. Also, on top of that, Hyundai dealers are the worst when it comes to markups.

Alex, when you talk about efficiency, I think it's time to give numbers. how many miles per Kw/Hr does it get? My Bolt gets 4 in the summer and 3 in the winter. A Ford Lightning is closer to 2 in summer. Where is this one?

Too bad it is so ugly looks like a bad Merkur XR4Ti. rear seat room absolutely sucks not even close to a CLS or Porsche in the rear look front lights are terrible best part of the vehicle is no piano black! FINALLY!

Hooray! A non black interior. I d buy one if I had 65k. But then I would have to wait a while to get it. In the meantime, I will enjoy my 6. 378 miles per kWh in my 2019 Fill-in-the-blank model. Yes I do hypermile.

Evs are never going mainstream until they are price competitive with ice vehicles and i do not see that happening anytime soon. Imo, for what this is and what it offers, it is overpriced for the current market

I love the design of the hyundai Ionic 6 but it fall short in trunk space. I just understand that the roof line and rear end, shaped like a Audi A7 but the trunk doesn't open up like a A7.
reply

Love the look of the car. my one design complaint is cars that put window controls in the center console. right next to your cup holders! Try not to spill your 64 ounce big gulp all over it!
