The 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Is The Ultimate The Driver's SUV

Every time we review a tech-heavy new vehicle the comment section explodes with all I want is a fun to drive car I want buttons back LCD screens are getting out of control. Well if that's you, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the answer. It's quite simply the best luxury CUV when it comes to driving dynamics whether you get this very green Quadrifolio model or the base 280 HP RWD model. Elephant in the room first: No, the Stelvio won't be winning any reliability awards, if you want that, get the Lexus. On the other hand Consumer Reports does rank it above the Land Rover and Jaguar options and even the Mercedes GLB. So take that for what its worth. The Stelvio isn't about the latest tech (the infotainment system is small and the instrument cluster is mostly analogue. It's not about the latest driving assistant tech, it does have lane centering but you won't find a Lincoln-like self driving system. What it IS about is driving. Quite simply the best in the segment when it comes to steering, handling, feel, feedback, etc. It's not going to the be the quietest or softest riding, but when it comes to the shut up and drive side of the equation, it's fantastic. What do you think? While some folks buy a car for comfy seats, cargo room, big back seats, or that ever popular reliability, the sales proposition for the Alfa is all about what happens behind the wheel. Is that enough?

Alex, Alfa Romeo owners are simply not having any major issues with these cars what so over. I m so shocked to hear you say that. I come here because you normally put a spot light on false rumors in the automotive space and tell the truth, but with you saying the Mercedes bmw and Audi will be more reliable than the stelvio is just 100% false. You ve even debunked consumer reports in a video which I point to all the time for reference so i hope your not saying the Alfa reliability is bad because of what metrics like consumer reports say. these cars are EXTREMELY solid SAYS owners. They too are even shocked because they assumed the worst!

Excellent review except for the cliche reliability nonsense at the end. Owner of a 2017 Giulia Quad and a 2020 Stelvio Ti Sport. Both have been flawless. Don't get me started on my German Uber Quality car experiences.
M 3 Sub Frame crack
M 5 Rod Bearing failure
911 IMS Bearing failure
S 5 Head Gasket failure
If you truly desire UNRELIABLE transportation, the Germans are they way to go. This isn't 1975. these Alfas are AMAZING (and you say as much multiple times in your review)
FORZA ALFA BABY!
THE KING IS BACK!

Reliability for non-Quad models isn't much of an issue. What is a major issue is the dealer network. Good dealers are hard to come by, making service very tricky. You're good if you happen to be near a dealer with a competent and well-staffed service department. Otherwise, I'd look elsewhere. It's beyond frustrating not being able to have scheduled maintenance done at the dealer, with many non-dealer shops unwilling to touch an Alfa.

I own a 2019 Stelvio 2L turbo and the car has been flawless. Maintenance costs have been on par with my old BMW. I have never had a problem with the car or my dealership.
Driving my Stelvio still brings a smile to my face. I ve taken a few trips through the mountains of Southern AZ and handling was excellent and noise was minimal compared to any of the other German and Japanese cars I ve owned.

I'd consider an Alfa Romeo, but there are exactly three dealers in Northern California and they are all in the Bay Area. Sacramento (closest city to me) with 2. 5 million people in the metro area doesn't have one. Going north of the Bay Area there isn't another until you hit Portland Oregon. Going south - Los Angeles. That's just way too spotty of a dealer network to feel comfortable buying one.

I own a 18 Ti Sport and I had zero issues over the past 4 years. It's the best car I've ever owned. It kills all Japanese competition and GLC. I would say X5 and SQ5 come close, but it's still not Alfa. This car is an emotion to drive. You are are still thinking, pull the trigger. I think it's the only drivers car left. No scifi gimmick. It's a 100% pure car.

The competiion is the Porsche Macan S and GTS. The Macan is exactly the same size, shape, slightly compromised interior volume and similar dynamic (if not acceleration) performance. The Macan does not start as low as the base Stelvio, but typical configurations are priced in line with the Stelvio. But you never mentioned it.

They have to add more exclusivity, not be afraid of being more exotic, and stop chasing bland competitors. More colors and materials options for interior, exterior, more customization. They need to learn from a Ferrari in this part of the game. All in all still a dream car!

The stelvio and x3 and macan are the best driving SUVs.
If you want ultimate go with the stelvio or macan. If you want a responsible reliable entry get the x3 or a gv70 if you want an even safer bet with excellent driving dynamics

Alfa has always been famous for it's engaging character. Unfortunately, they have always been known for being your mechanic's best friend. As essentially all italian cars, build quality and reliability tend to be terrible from day one.

I own a Stelvio Sport Ti, heavily optioned. Great car. Living in remote Vancouver Island, I have a 2 hour drive to down island through mountains with curvey roads. lots of fun.

Very odd that you're reviewing a pre-facelift model just after a facelift has beeen released. many of the dowsides you've mentioned have been addressed.

It s actually refreshing to see an instrument panel that has a nice set of GUAGES, and a sensible infotainment screen that fits in the dash.

The new 2024 Chevy Trax looks to be a huge value in the sub compact SUV category. Would make great content for future review if possible.

Thank you for the informative review. But the real question is, when will Stellantis build a Dodge version, which will undercut it?
