BMW M3 meets its ancestor

Meet the ancestors, BMW M3 style - For more BMW news and reviews visit MoronAntidote: The other side of coin and time to look in the mirror for some:
I've noticed there's a tendency for elitist/purist types who claim to own E30 M3s to influence certain people such that they blindly jump on their bandwagon in the hope of appearing to be 'automotively cultured'. The E30 M3 was a great car for sure, but it IS vastly inferior to the current M3 in objective terms. In subjective terms, the old M3 was more raw, but that does not translate into 'more exciting' for most 'honest' people.

The current M3 is genuinely quick regardless of this arbitrarily derived '200 kilos overweight', and so much quicker than the original M3 that the excitement derived from it's greater acceleration could easily compensate for the 'lack of feel' you claim to perceive, in the hands of another. Subjectivity is not something you can turn into universal fact, it's individual. Too much feedback can be annoying and provide no real gains, but people rarely complain about too much power. My comments are prompted by the disappointment of a recent, lengthy E92 M3 drive and comparison with the 2004 996 GT3 that I'm currently using. I'm more of a BMW fan that a Porsche one, so for me, the E92 was a frustrating car - a mighty engine and a friendly chassis hampered by way too much weight. It's a sporty car rather than a sports car, and my older GT3 feels a much faster machine despite the power deficit because it weighs so much less. Pity BMW doesn't offer a lightweight M3 GT4 option.

You're right. Way too much crap and clutter in most modern cars. And do I really need to be able to programme the shift speed, throttle response, suspension firmness, steering effort, exhaust volume and traction control parameters in my sports saloon or coupe? There are too many manufacturers trying to make their cars fit all potential buyers, most of whom are told what they want by advertising and have no business in cars meant for enthusiasts. They're dumbing it all down for the rest of us.

It's valid to criticise a car on its subjective shortcomings, though. Especially sports cars. Elitist/purist types like myself are generally at least as interested in things like feel and feedback as we are in outright speed. In the latter regard, the current M3 is adequate for a car with 420 BHP (it'd be genuinely quick if it wasn't 200 kiilos overweight, but in terms of the former, even if you can find one on 18's with a manual 'box, it's only so-so. It's nice and comfy, but it's no E30 M3.

OK, is it just me, or does this guy look like some sort of introverted zombie? He looks like an extra that got kicked off the set of MJ'S Thriller video because he couldn't stop picking his nose! Weird. Just weird.

my e39 (540) flies, i settled for nothing less then the 6 speed.
she's fast for me, most people who want to play games on the highway dont have much a chance. drop to 3rd punch it and you got dummies mad at you.

well bryan, i have an e39 and its stored, ive got money tied up in it, and that happens in life. car lovers tend to spend money on their vehicles they cant get back in resale.

3: 37 -The current car is one of the horniest things on the road. - lol
The look of the E30 is timeless. It'll never age. Wait a minute. that's for all M3s.
