Overlooking the tyre difference smacks of a proscribed outcome to me. But it should also be noted the Jimny has more room for the driver. I'm a large guy and there's more room for me in the Jimny than there is in the Defender. I wanted a Defender pretty hard for a long time then the opportunity came up when a ran a fleet of emergency vehicles including Defenders, mostly Landcruiser's though. I jumped into one ready to love it and have probably never been so disappointed in a car. The handbrake was jammed into my left thigh and the whole right hand side of my body was pressed into the door card and handles, and to cap it off the vision was very ordinary and it was just cramped and an unpleasant place to be. I've been and driven a 2019 Jimny since and it has more room for me than the Defender did, better use of the space and a rational ergonomic layout. Sad to say the Defender is just horrible to be in. I've bought the Jimny and the first drive will 500m down the road to the tyre shop for some good AT's, Bridgestone AT697's, it's what I run on my current fleet of 4x4 and utilities.

Let's be frank, both the vehicles are equally capable, both can climb rocks, both can wade through slush, even if I own a Maruti gypsy (the long wheel base version of the Suzuki jimny sj413 which is available only in India ) I'd still take the defender, because the defender is much more easier to drive off-road, and more driver oriented, for example the driver's seats are much closer to the door, secondly it can even tow and carry supplies! Also as I happened to drive one of these off-road, I was able to climb over much bigger rocks, after all the transmission proved to be something great due to the better torque distribution, but the Suzuki jimny is just build as a car with a 4x4! Since Suzukis are known to much better in weight reduction, therefore the jimny is also equally capable! Just don't hate the defender just because of it's British identity!

I am a long term Land Rover (Defender) owner and love the marque. the Suzuki Jimny is a great little 4x4, and without getting into the constant argument 'Land Rovers are crap' 'Land Rovers are the best 4x4' etc, etc, I think the biggest difference is ability of the Defender, over a long period time, to take the knocks/abuse (because that's what it was designed for. They (the Defender and the Suzuki) are designed for two different purposes. And BTW swapping from road tyres to AT tyres will make the most difference to any cars ability to drive 'off road'. that's a fact! Just watch very expensive SUV's on 22- road tyres trying to get up a little wet grassy slope!

Very simple. 1 - The Landy is on much more agressive tyres. 2 - the Jimny only beaches where deep ruts have been cut by Landies - just like a LR can't go where tractors have cut the ground. On virgin ground and equal tyres the Jimny will go places where the LR just won't - not least because of size and turning circle. I regularly drive both and the only advantage the LR has is towing ability and room in the back - beyond that the Jimny is all you need.

Jimny on road tires and defender on terrain tires? There is a very big difference between a road tire and a terrain tire. A road tire is worth absolutely nothing in the mud. Not a fair comparison! Put the same tires as the Defender has on the Jimny and you get a completely different result. A Jimny is very hard to beat in the terrain, anyone who knows about off-road riding in the terrain knows that.

The difference between Australian off road ventures and British ones: you wet your pants in Australia from the gnarly tracks and the sheer fear! British ones- you wet your pants laughing at what is called -off road-- not much more than my drive way!

Defender is pretty good, I think only a few off road cars can outperformed it. but Jimny, with a little bit of adjustment (winch, tyres) can go wherever the defender can

The Jimmy was on standard road tyres whilst the defender had all terrain tyres. Any off road enthusiast would know the difference that makes.
