There are two very cool, very new luxury saloons in town. One is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the one they throw all the technology at to make it widely regarded as the best big saloon/sedan/whatever you'd like to call it. S-Classes come with all kinds of engine, right up to and including very powerful petrol ones, but this is a little more straightforward - it's an S400d. Actually an engine that suits it rather well. It costs -104, 425, has 330hp and more importantly a mammoth cruising range. The other car is still relatively new too, and it's more expensive and luxurious still. It's a Bentley Flying Spur and as a W12 it costs -168, 300 and has 635bhp - figures both rather bigger than the S-Class's, but don't let semantics get in the way - more expensive S-Classes are available and a cheaper Flying Spurs are too (besides, there's a reason for the mis-match explained in the vid

Well, very well, said. I've been a loyal merc buyer for almost 30 years until they decided to copy tesla and do trendy conTEMPORARY look. If I'd wanted that, I'd have bought a lexus - or obviously a tesla. For me, when I'm parting with that much cash, I want a car that won't look cheap and dated in three or four years. (the 1980s and early 90s S class still looks good, I'd argue better than this) You didn't touch on it, but I also feel like the fit and finish in a merc has really gone downhill - my last six all rattle, particularly at the dash components and straight off the showroom floor. I don't need/want purple disco lighting, but making the tech go away is a really nice option. I'm not THAT old - a gen X'er - but wrap me in leather and wood all day long, its a day at the spa. Slap a bunch of soon to be out of date touch screens all around and I feel like I'm at work - and that's when its new, rather than a constant reminder of how out of date this, still has payments left on it, car actually is. Add to that, in my opinion the touch screens look like glued on after thoughts, not even well integrated and I wouldn't call them clean at all.

The S Class, 8s no doubt, dynamically a better car. Unfortunately, the interior designer should be executed. The idiot responsible for the design-s crassness, is only exceeded by the idiot that signed off the interior. Those screens look so cheap and tacky. The S Class interior used to be a special place. Now it looks like US or Japanese tacky, plastic dross. The Bentley is preferable, but it-s not far behind in tut. Whoever decided that embroidered -First Edition- was classy was probably the same person who signed off the plasticky looking screen and the VW switchgear.
I-m afraid that greed has got the better of a lot of the automotive folk. They spread the unscientific ideas that natural materials are bad for the environment when it-s quite the opposite. It-s the profit that counts. I really hope that Merc doesn-t go down the route of these YS/Jappo screens. Unfortunately, judging by the new C Class, it seems the lunatics gave taken over the asylum. This gives BMW a chance to steal sales from Merc, as long as they don-t get on the me too bandwagon.

Your opinion about the SClass buttons is your opinion. Obviously, Tesla thought differently and set the standards for new automobiles and MB decided to make an intelligent change. That's just my opinion. then, you decided to stress your viewers while watching you complain about something that is going to happen anyway. The future is. 'car, roll the window half way down-, and there you go. Taking your hands off the wheel while driving is not smart. Then your analysis -16: 24 just didn't make sense to me.

I have just changed a Bentley Flying Spur for a 2021 S Class Mercedes Hybrid, and I have to tell you the Mercedes leaves the Bentley standing. The comfort level in the S Class in absolutely wonderful. the ride is supreme. There is so much to this car that I could take all day telling you about it. If you can find a dealer that has one on site, go for a test drive, you will be really impressed. The big problem is getting one. By the way, the S Class is half the price.

Oh dear what have Mercedes done, looks like a tarted up Tesla -
It-s why rich folk wear a mechanical wristwatch and not a smart watch -
The centre console is now awful in the Bentley, too many colours and the combo of piano black and aluminium looks a mess
Think I-d buy the previous generation, at a very good second hand price and enjoy the same feel, but even more retro luxury

The trend of replacing analog controls with screens need to stop! It's a lazy design choice and ergonomic nightmare. Can you imagine what these screens and their UIs will look like 10 years from now. They won't age well! I've owned many Mercedes, including several AMGs, but I won't be buying any more Mercedes until they stop this tech/screen madness.

This is a very British review, with obvious bias towards the british brand. So many statements of -I prefer. -. So few actual fact based comparisms. Like how the S class more modern. Better features. And that there are even more luxurious versions of the S class

Bentleys are so ugly and extremely overrated, interior wise not comparable to the mercedes. The only thing that sets these cars apart is the price that is not justified. There is not 1 thing that Mercedes doesn-t do better than a Bentley
reply

Bentley its not even close. It has the perfect blend of class, elegance and technology.
I preferred the old S Class interior, the new is certainly futuristic, clean and impressively but its missing that timeless elegance and class.

Compared with the Bentleys of the '30s, '40s and '50s, interiors of both of these look like a lot of cheap, shiny tat. They have no taste, are vulgar, over-the-top and lack what those early Bentleys had: pure, unfussed class.
