I really really want both. I understand that these are two different cars with different purposes. It is amazing how well BMW got them so right. They don't compare against each other except in the brilliance of their executions. Given the choice, it would be the M1. I do love than engine and this is where it was most at home.

Let's put it this way. the M1 looks good still today, and is appreciating in value.
That's a classic.
The i8 will look very dated in 30 years and won't be worth anything.
Just another contemporary sports car.

The i8 isn't a sports car per say, it's a GT car made for the road while the m1 was a dedicated super car made for the track
